He got his opportunity last year because the competition in the outfield sucked. He's never been more than a contact hitter and an average outfielder. That's not good enough this year , the mystery to me this year is PM insistence to play Stevenson ??

Because he wants to put the best defensive OF out there he can.

Mainieri is trying to figure out the proper balance between defense/hitting overall.
Stevenson is the worst hitter but the best outfielder.
Sciambra is an average hitter and average outfielder.
Foster is a good hitter but probably the worst outfielder (At least he has an arm).
McMullen is a very good hitter but is average to below average outfielder.
Laird is a decent hitter and very good outfielder.
All of this could be worthless for next year because like I said we have 2 potentially big time outfielders coming in and both will push hard to start.

This is the best assessment I've seen of the situation. Inconsistency has been the problem. Laird and Stevenson have the highest ceilings, and CPM is dying for them to reach that potential. McMullen and Foster are not good defensive outfielders, but are consistently the strongest hitters. Actually, Sciambra is pretty consistent. He is a better than average outfielder, and his .400+ OBP has been steady all year. On the downside, his strikeouts have also been consistently high. The freshman will make freshman mistakes (not tagging up, getting picked off). The more experienced guys likely won't. Stevenson did at least get the bat on the ball this weekend, although he also looked horrible on the deep fly to center. He is also the least effective at the plate. In my opinion, Laird is the strongest outfielder and should be in CF. So CPM needs to decide between consistency and inconsistency. We'll see how he leans when things get tough during the stretch run and tournaments.

My point is put Laird in center and forget it . You'll never be able to get Mc M and Raph out of the lineup .

What happened with this and when? I missed a lot of Friday's game.

Don't guess you saw Laird's peg to the plate that held the runner on third!
That was VERY shallow. The throw was dead accurate, but it WAS a lollipop.

Deep fly to center. A little tougher than routine but not much. Drifted back, got turned around, stumbled and never came close to getting a glove on it. If I recall the runner didn't score so it ultimately was a nonissue.

In Omaha pitching and defense will dominate. That's when Stevenson will be of most value.
It's not like you're putting a great hitter on the bench by playing him, either.

I agree with this. Which is why I think PM has been giving him as many ABs as possible, hoping he can get comfortable and not be as much of a drag on the line-up as he has been. This weekend was promising.

Laird will be a much better player after a year in the weight room. He only has 5 extra-base hits for the year. That's only 1 out of every 11 of his hits. He's a string bean who needs a lot more muscle.

How the hell do you run a 6.5 60 AND throw 91 from outfield in high school. That is unreal. Usually only see one or the other.

Has nothing to do with who was or was not running. The peg was there. I realize y'all are smrter than I am but most speak with little regard for the facts.
