A lot of us were uncertain about the fit and the hire at the time. I mean, on paper, it was a home run hire. At the time, he was by far the best, most successful P5 (4?) head coach, at least without a championship, at least, again by resume/on paper.
The initial staff mistakes he made set him back and he never recovered. He underperformed at every level except, possibly, bringing back Baker and Raymond and bringing in Jayden.
Other than that, he was a lackluster, low effort recruiter and coach. He simultaneously over-relied on his offensive coaches (and QBs) and just didn't do enough to make sure he had adequate offensive production, QB protection, physicality (really on both sides of the ball, to a degree, but particularly on offense) needed to succeed in our league.
One must, even without considering how much he was paid, give Kelly a D grade for his tenure. He failed to meet even minimum success standards over time, with only modest peaks of beating Bama and Daniels' Heisman run.
