yeah, he hasn't been even close to what he was in 2009, but comparing his situation to Watkins' is laughable. Really hasn't been the same since that start he had against Florida last year, but he's still better than pretty much anyone else in the bullpen. Not saying a lot, but still.

so has anyone in this jumbo-thread yet clarified how Watkins could be reported as booted, yet Mainieri was saying last night that all players with eligibility would be welcomed back in the fall?

I doubt any baseball players even have full scholarships. I think baseball gets something ridiculous like 7.5 scholarships to split among the team, so I doubt he was going to school on a full ride that was just lost. It is a little different than sports like football and basketball where you have a bunch of guys on full rides.
PM probably just told him he'd be riding the bench and the kid decided it was time to move on.
Tyler, I believe Baseball gets 12 scholarships total. Most players get 1/3 of a scholarship.
Rumor has it that only Jacoby Jones was offered a full scholarship this past season.

Mainieri did try to cut Louis Coleman after 2007
That's not what Louis told me, but ok.

Jones was offered a full last year. In-state signings are crucial because TOPS covers most so they can play on small scholarships. I also think everyone must get at least a 1/3 scholarship, however.

11.7 is correct.

I asked a coach if any player was on a full scholarship and he told me none were.

Offered doesn't mean he accepted.

It was Grewe. Had a visit with him in a social situation the week after the CSF series so he was on top of the world and really chatty. I don't know why he'd not give me accurate info, but I guess maybe they don't want people to know who has what kind of scholarship.

That Mainieri expressed a belief in him during that period of time and was a big reason Coleman turned it around.

This is very similar to the version I heard from someone connected to the baseball program, but not from Coleman or PM themselves.

I heard Coleman speak at the pre-season "First Pitch Banquet" before the 2010 season. He talked about it in detail. Mainieri evidently lit a fire in Coleman. But not by being positive and expressing a belief in him. Rather, he gave Coleman some "tough love" and told him that he wasn't sure he had what it took to be successful at LSU. Coleman flat out said that he hated Mainieri for a while after that, but that he eventually came to realize that it was Mainieri that made him the pitcher that he became. He did give a lot of credit to Mainieri for making him grow up, commit himself and become the pitcher we saw in 2009.

Why keep him?
Because an arm is harder to replace than a bat.

How about some GD loyalty for one - this isn't much different than dropping the kid from oversigning.
