Squib kick

Late in the game and the team is trailing by 9-10 points where you know you need at least a TD and FG and clock is running down after you are well within FG range. I hate watching coaches continue to run the clock down or even worse, also try to go for it on 4th down. Just go ahead and take the FG now to save as much time for your offense as you can.

Second and nine, run straight up the middle for no gain or a loss

This is entirely conditional. There can be weaknesses or mismatches that you can exploit early but might be addressed in halftime adjustments. I doagree that coaches shouldn't automatically take the ball like so many do but it should really be game to game.

My pet peeve is choosing to field punts under almost any circumstances. The amount of muffs in college football (and the consequences thereof) vastly outweighs the 5 yards of average return yards or whatever it is. A few years ago some guy started a Twitter thread about it. He said basically if you expect more than 1.5 muffs on average per year (which is slightly lower than the CFB average per team of 1.75), then you are better off just letting it go.
In my opinion, you should basically just never put a guy back there. The team is giving you the ball, let them.

Not going for it on 4th and short.

First and goal from the one. Run up the middle, lose 2. Run up the middle on second down, no gain. Third down Run up the middle. No gain. 4th down Run up the middle. Turn over on downs. A smart coach many years ago said it's stupid to run at the 300 lb guys. They just lay down and clog the middle. Run side to side and wear out the big guys. Eventually you just walk in.

1st and 10 incomplete pass. 2nd down run up the middle every time. It's so predictable.
And, you see this in the pros, too.

Wasting timeouts early in the game every dam game. Or the predictable play calling on 1st down. If not for AA where would this offense be?? Harlem Berry is a huge threat with the ball in space and has hands of a wr. Use him correctly and line him up outside with his speed and get him some screens. Instead just running him up the middle. The Oline is showing itself that’s why Durham isn’t showing that jump he should be making from year 1 to 2.

From the Les Miles days... Toss sweep to the short side of the field

A head coach keeping assistant coaches when the unit they coach is constantly underperforming.

Trying to block a punt instead of setting up a return. We see usually 1-2 punt returns a year, sometimes more for a team. Might go years between blocked punts. Coming after a team you've stopped, who is giving you possession, and hitting the punter and giving them the ball back- dumb.
Take this weekend. We didn't need to flip the momentum, and we were able to drive basically at will on Southeastern. No reason to frick with blocking a kick against them.

Going for it on 4th and 3+ in the first quarter from inside the 30

When we run the ball on every 2nd down of every game.

huh? we hardly ran any toss sweeps. did you not watch games? miles mainly played in a phone booth and ran between the tackles....toss dive, HB iso, HB power.
I think you meant SPEED OPTION to the short side like JJ did .

Barely giving the ball to Charles Scott in the 2nd half against Kentucky in 2007

When it’s 3rd & 2 and you call a pass play at the line of scrimmage to your slowest receiver (TE) on the field and it gets nothing. It baffles me sometimes at the lack of common sense that coaches at this level has (Sloan) when calling plays.
