re: What's this boards problem with Danny Etling

Actually, if you study your history and chat with some of us old timers you'll find that it's legendary that the most popular position on the team has always been the back up QB...true story...

What? The lowest ranked recruiting class we had the last 4 years was 6th. Miles left this program with talent.
The real problem is that no cfb program recruits well enough on the oline to beat bama running a prostyle offense.
We had 2 all sec olineman and they straight manhandled our oline.

If he is doing well why would he be replaced?
Another QB on the roster will emerge and offer us a lot more opportunities to win the back half of the season. Ironically, his playing well early will sow the seeds of his own replacement, as the younger QBs should get more late playing time if we have comfortable leads.
Plus - he will be learning his 3rd Offense in 5 years.

I totally agree with the OL problem...and Miles should have known better since he was an OLman himself...but the DL wilted some under Chief also...

who would have thought he'd start a thread knighting for Etling?

Bingo
You gotta spread them out, run misdirection and make them cover the field sideline to sideline in hopes to pop some plays between the freak shows in the front of Bama's defense. Can't let them get quick reads and attack.
Also mix in a little power running to keep them honest and stretch them vertically once or twice a quarter to back the safeties off.
It seems like LSU has tried to slam the RB into the defense without misdirection and then play action pocket pass off the traditional running attack with little innovation for two years in a row with similar results. Hopefully Canada can change this

Other than the fact that he isn't very good?
He's so slow to throw the ball. He won't let it go until the receiver is already open. That killed us against Alabama.
He protects the ball and gets the huddle moving. That's a positive. But he certainly isn't a good QB by any means.

Who knew opinions of a player could vary this much.
Makes you wonder

When it boils down to it, does anyone see us winning a championship and beating Alabama with Etling?
I dont.
Dude you need to face the fact that LSU is not beating Bama until Sabah leaves. It is what it is

I just don't think people truly understand what makes the difference b/w QBs that consistently beat quality opponents and ones who don't.
People that compare Mauck and Etling are really missing it. In NO way is Etling the effective runner Mauck was. Think back to Mauck's big runs in that SECCG vs TN, then flash forward to Etling's lone rush attempt vs FL at the goal line. Suffice to say, there is very little that Etling shares with Mauck when it comes to moving the chains with their feet.
DCs gameplan very differently for QBs that are a viable option to run and that affects the passing game in immeasurable ways. When I tell people that Flynn had runs in every significant victory in '07 of 10 yards or more on 3rd down passing plays that kept scoring drives alive in one score wins, they didn't realize it. When I tell them that JR could pass the ball b/w the 20s, even with all defenders in coverage, yet struggled in the red zone, they didn't know why. JR was so big, nobody blitzed him, and he wasn't a threat to run. He refused to take off with open field, until the TN game in '06.
I guess his stock value had dropped so much that he finally decided it was worth it. Because from TN game on, he took off, and so did the offense, to a point that Jimbo even put in some designed runs. Once the defenses had to defend his feet, the passing lanes opened, and JR ended up the No. 1 overall pick. Go back and look at his rushing yards before and after TN '06.
Orgeron seems to be aware of what we need and want, and that is a QB that is a viable running option when needed. One that can hold up to contact and effectively decide when to use his feet.

Well if he starting week 1 next year he was the Best QB. Competition this Spring should be Juicy!
Posted on 12/14/16 at 2:23 pm to TIGRLEE
He's a backup quarterback that landed the starting gig.
Posted on 12/14/16 at 2:27 pm to TIGRLEE
What the hell? Danny Etling's production on the field does not line up with your post at all!
There needs to be full and open competition next year at Quarterback and may the best player win. If Etling is as good as you say then he will be the starter.

This is the truth .
He's way better than Brandon Harris. But so are about 90 % of D1 QBs. We just missed on him because he has all the tools and dominated against weak competition in highschool. He just doesn't have the poise or "nerve " to compete at a high level . His emotions get the best of him .
Danny etling has the poise , pocket awareness , grit, toughness, etc. Basically everything you need to be an elite QB. Except he has a noodle arm, and his mechanics are complete shite to be perfectly honest . He throws off his back foot about 75% of his throws. He played extremely bad in the bama game but then again , almost every QB struggled against them. There were several passes he should of completed that game but was obviously shook up .
He won't ever win a national championship, but he's serviceable and a great teammate it seems . Honestly I would like to see Scott get his shot next year , if he isn't ready we know what we have in etling . Then again I'm not a college coach so I'm sure etling will be the guy .
Btw Matt Mauck was a much better runner than etling . Not even close . Mauck was pretty damn physical .

He isn't great, but he's all y'all have. He can win y'all 10 games.

I'll take Etling at the SEC Media Days. We can be highly successful with this kid. The QB ain't the nest athlete. He should put the ball, quickly into the best athletes' hands.

Im glad we offered and picked up Scott. I think that this kid was gambling on a new system coming in. This could be a good union.

Not if you take into account Canada wanting the QB to run. Etling is very bad at protecting himself.

This board thinks every QB should be a Brett Favre.
Tom Brady won multiple superbowls with a mediocre arm.
Edit: The best QB in practice will start. There is no conspiracy to start Etling over better QBs because hes a senior.
