Clueless?
Summary. Astros met with him. Teams were told it'd need to be 6/120 to Get the deal done. At that point the field was reduced to cubs yanks and dodgers.
So then if not for pr what is the point of telling fans the offer that didn't even get them into what was the range that would get the job done?
It made you feel good that you tried, right? Mission accomplished. But it's easy to see it was never a serious possibility.
And I never said it was crazy to go after him. In fact my belief is that for a mere 20 million posting fee that every team in baseball should have posted it and taken their chances. But I am saying there was never a real threat that the Astros would land him.

. Most of you shite on the Astros for being cheap and having a roster full of no names. Yet this off season, they've been in on the top two IFA's, Abreu (at one point were considered the front runners) and now offered $100+ million to Tanaka. Now to shite on them, its "this is just PR, they knew they'd lose him." Because you offer a guy over a hundred million dollars for shits and giggles.
Yep. Was going to post that. If this was a PR move, what does this accomplish? What are you getting other than saying you offered someone some money?
Nothing.
I don't understand this line of thinking.

They want the reaction that prom had
"Everyone says they are cheap but they were "in it" for two top free agents! They arent cheap anymore"
Boom, good PR. At the very least better than doing nothing at all
How many teams do you honestly see comment on a player they didnt get? They wanted a gold star for trying bur it wasnt a sincere move

What does that accomplish?? What does SAYING that they tried accomplish? That's what I'm looking for.
What accomplished more was that they actually went out and spent money on Free Agents to better their bullpen. They've built one of the best farm systems in baseball in 2 years.
So they need PR to make people think they're just trying to sign players?

As an Astros fan, this does very much sound like a PR move.
For sure, just so mgnt can point to it when the talking heads bitch. I like the philosophy behind our moves we will see if it works out but it would be against everything we have done to make a move like this.

The Astros were consistently one of the best teams in baseball in the 90's by having one of the best farm systems. Unfortunately it didn't translate into championships. So they canniballized the farm system to go get big name players to win now. That didn't work either. At the end of the day, they were left with no stars, a bunch of terrible contracts, and no young talent.
From a baseball standpoint, what they've done is the right thing. The cupboard is full. Making this move was the right thing too. Fans can bitch now all they want that don't understand.
One thing though, eventually you have to go get a few key veterans, maybe a star to make a run. You've got young talent that very well could grow into stars, but when the team is on the cusp, they have to make some moves. I'd give it one more season. If the stros don't make moves next year, bitch all you want.

I am proud they at least took a shot but I think they knew they had little to no chance against the Yankees.

but Stros signed Scott Feldman and Dexter Fowler. Back the F off #progress

100 million was never going to get it done so it's not a legitimate offer and certainly doesn't rise to competing for his services.

No one here is saying anything about winning the AL west. No one here has said anything about being contenders.
If they have, could you link them? Now, with the moves they made over the offseason has the roster improved? Has the bullpen improved? How about the farm system? Has the farm system improved as well? To believe that this team isn't moving in the right direction, would be a bit dishonest on your part
That is the progress. So frick your unnecessary hashtag and it's irrelevance.

is it working? that question cannot be answered yet, because it has not shown itself on the MLB level. so at what point should tangible MLB improvement be expected? 2016 season? later than that? you tell me how much patience should a fanbase have after three horrible seasons and no major free agent signings. spring training has not even started, and this squad again looks like a 90+ loss team. that horizon sure does look good though, in theory.....

From preliminary reports, what they wanted to accomplish from the get-go was to build from the ground up. If you got a house and you start seeing the framing going up, don't you get a little excited about it? You start to see what you've envisioned come together. What do you call what they're doing? PROGRESS. You get excited about it.

I expect 90 losses this year. Again, IMPROVEMENT from where they were starting 4-5 years ago.

Really? An MLB takes 3 years to completely rebuild from the bottom of the farm system on up? That's all it should take? I thought you were better than that. NO TEAM will be very good with that sort of rebuild. MLB doesn't work that way. Never has. Never will. Astros fans are mad because it's been 6-7 years since they've put a product on the field that was a contending team.
Compare that with the Pirates. The Royals. To what the Marlins are doing. Watching what they're doing and how fast they've accomplished rebuilding the farm, I don't know how or why anyone with the knowledge of what's going on would think that they are in a position to be terrible for 10 years.
Luhnow came over from a winning organization. I just don't believe that he was hired to hold on to a organization and build it to stay mediocre and bring in a profit. I don't buy it. If that were true, I'd fully believe that he'd be mentioned for other jobs because he'd be putting his name out there.

they have a $40 million dollar payroll. They had no intentions of signing this guy. Get a grip
