I’m in the minority but id like to see them extend Nico now and move him to ss in 2027 and get off the Swanson contract after this coming season. This team has gotten really old really fast. Shaw gives you insurance to bregs coming off injury at 3rd and another year to develop as super utility.

Swanson has been incredible defensively but he’s making 28, 27, 26Ms in his 33-35 year old seasons. Nico could be had for less than half of that on a 2nd base extension now and a value deal when you move him to ss. He still keeps gold glove defense and gives you a higher contact rate at the plate.

Next offseason the cubs are going to have holes at 1st, LF, C, and RF. Need some cash to extend or fill some of those holes especially since they traded Cassie who would have been a cheap replacement.

Hoerner is a FA in 2027. He is going to be 29 on Opening Day this year. He needs to be dealt for more pitching, perhaps in the bullpen.

Unless you think you can win now - Nico was the Cubs best hitter in the post season last year, and whoever would get Nico only gets him for one year the Cubs would not get the best return for that.

Personally I'd like to go for it this year and Nico helps with that and worry about how to work it out with what to do with Shaw later. For now I like him as a super utility bat on the bench and let's worry about 2027 in 2027.

you have Shaw - PCA and Busch all still very much in their prime, or entering their prime.

I don't think you can trade Swanson with no viable SS option on the team, or coming up. Nico would be several notches down from what you get from Swanson on defense

At that money and his age, I think it’s the worst Cubs deal since they gave Jason Heyward a huge contract.

Swanson's going nowhere. I'm not a fan of trading anyone. We (yes I'm a Cub) just spent $20 million on our bullpen, we showed last year our pitching infrastructure can turn chicken shite into chicken salad (see Keller and Pomeranz) we just upgraded the lineup offensively and the bench by allowing Shaw to be a super utility guy, we have like 10 guys now who can start games if necessary, and 5 of those not counting Steele even had ERA's in the 3's last year.

Get one more bench bat maybe and roll with what you have. New CB in 2027 worry that year after that is worked out.

You could get a bullpen piece from a playoff-ready team like NYY, DET, CLE, KC, SEA who all are looking for INF help. The Cubs bullpen is still well below average. It needs a RHP that can blow hitters away late in games. Not these guys that throw 92mph.

Busch is the same age as Nico and you named the only two young position players on the team in Shaw and PCA. PCA’s second half and Shaw’s first half were scary bad.

Nico will not be a cub in 2027. I doubt he’s going anywhere for 2026

And you don’t know when Shaw will miss games to attend more “funerals”.

Busch is under team control through 2030.

Nico is going to want $15-17mil per year over 5-7yrs.

Their ages are the same but the investments are totally different. These light-hitting hustle-style novelty players like Nico tend to break down quickly.

Yea, im not sure what other teams are running out a core of young superstars. These are all very solid foundational pieces. The still lack that "guy" but you can also make up for that when you have a bunch of really good players like they do.

When's the last time the #1 and #2 pick have played on the same big league team?

Both washed, but still pretty cool
