hey also aren't things that their typical audience want to indulge in. OTL does great reporting, but I don't think many people want wall to wall of football players punching out ladies and what that means, etc.

ESPN's typical audience probably doesn't want to hear about the things that happen at Penn St, Baylor or Mich State. But I think we can both agree that investigative journalism has changed in the last two decades and some things need to be reported on.

I always cringe at the dudes who comment on Facebook articles saying (The Miss State commit that punched a girl on campus comes to mind) "Why are you reporting on this. I only care what this individual does on the field."

quit watching ESPN a couple years ago as well. I didn't make a conscious effort to do it. I just gradually started watching it less and less because I was so turned off by the constant politics.

And I'm a big sports fan and used to always watch ESPN. But I don't even bother with it anymore.

Same. Wasn't some huge "imma boycott ESPN moment." Just became less interesting to me the more they talked sociopolitical issues.

I like talking politics, but I like sports more.

You are conflating issues. There is a difference between reporting and harping. Spending all day on multiple shows talking about nonsports stuff isn't resonating. It is what it is.

Not necessarily.

I personally couldn't give a crap about the political shite that has been hovering over ESPN for the last few years. I simply stopped watching because I can easily view any highlight that interests me with the click of a mouse. There's no need for me to watch an episode of highlights when I can go online for it. I'm sure that there are many more like me.

I can agree with you on the reporting and harping angle. I just think some people don't like opinionated broadcast when it comes to sports and some do.

Frankly, I don't get upset with ESPN about too many things. Outside of the fact that they moved around the radio schedule too much and the fact that CFB Gameday is entirely too bloated nowadays.

Why can't people admit that politics has turned people off

A guy won back-to-back US Opens this week, and the headline of their top golf story online last week was “Tiger Will Win Amother Major. Book It.”

I don’t give a shite about politics. This kind of bullshite is MUCH more offensive than politics.

Wasn't this what Outside the Lines was supposed to be? Use that to tell the off the field stories and let Sports Center do its thing reporting on actual sports.

It is also why ESPN is spending so much money on getting NFL, NBA, and college football games. They know that’s what gets eyeballs on tv and they can’t survive without actually having a game on every few days. It is funny that ESPN wants to move away from sportscenter but it usually is one of the highest rated programs they have. They’re trying to become hip and bring in a new audience but don’t have the personalities to do it. They have more dead weight at ESPN than ever before and just as much ego as ever before.

I don't think the country will ever forgive ESPN for that over Lauren Hill.

Also, I think we forget one of the most common ways to watch ESPN: in a bar, sometimes without sound. They can get a lot of eyeballs by showing highlights in that way.

Very true - this even happens at home. We'll have it on in the background, but as soon as the talk and opinion time gets lengthy, the channel changes.

SportSCenter used to show at least one highlight from every MLB, NBA and NFL game - now they don't even show all of the scores/stats...

I'm not sure about that; there's no reason to turn on ESPN to see highlights. I get them on my phone within minutes of them happening anyway, and most people can say the same.

why?
I know everyone can get the highlights online but ESPN could provide a more entertaining way of delivering them all in one show, instead of going to several different Web sites to get the highlights you want.

They went downhill after they cancelled Australian rules football and the lumber jack Olympics imo.

actually agree 100 percent. I’m sick of the starfrickers. ESPN cares more about Johnny Doichebag in the CFL than they do about the World Cup. I don’t care AT ALL what some athlete tweeted. Their CWS coverage yesterday was a tribute to the Clemens family. Their top news story a week ago on the Bottom Line is that Kevin Durant “might” retire in six years. This is why I’m done with them outside of live sports.

I think this is a bigger issue than the politics. It's not they have a political slant, it's that the shows are bad and incredible superficial and dumb.

They have leaned hard into the "E" of ESPN when prior eras leaned into the "S". The network cares about personalities and image. It's basically a gossip rag that's obsessed with celebrity. And I could not give less of crap about that sort of stuff.

Hard to believe, but ESPN used to be on the forefront of bringing statistical analysis to the regular fan. They also had shows like Edge NFL Matchup which broke down film. They talked sports, but in an educated way. We're never going back to that, and it's a shame.

But I think the network has turned off a lot of people by becoming the equivalent of a tabloid even more than its politics. At least an investigative story on concussions is about sports. That's a real issue. Where a guy ate dinner last night or who he's beefing with on twitter is not.

When I first read this there was still a part of me that was wondering which bias in the play of football you were referring to. But of course, we are just talking about politics.
