Of course, the difference is, if the QB gets sacked, they still have to go 85 yards. If your guy gets tackled around the 30 or something, that's not even a hail mary into the endzone.

the risk of your guy getting tackled/screwing up= you are getting fired
the risk of my guy getting sacked= you have one play to go 85 yards against my defense

Kick the FG. Too many things could go wrong otherwise.

I'm pretty sure that a pro-QB, whose only mission is to avoid a sack (with 9 players holding) has better odds then who ever you chose to run 93 yards into his endzone.
if you're talking about him dropping back 5-8 yards, you might as well just run the ball up the gut

Yes, they would both be better options than running 93 yards in the wrong direction.
But what would be your answer to-
QB- in shotgun
2 WR- one on each side
1 TE- SS
2RB- split in shotgun

Asking an Oline to block for 12 seconds is an insane thing to do
If you hold guys for 5 seconds then theyve done an amazing job

I'm asking my 5OL/1TE/2RB to block,tackle,hold,grab,faskmask... whatever they can do, the 5-6 guys rushing my QB.
When my QB is in the danger zone, throw a rainbow out the back of the endzone.
At worst, my opponent will have to go 93 yards on one play to beat me.

I'd let JJ run the option, that play always seems to take at least 10 seconds to develop(or not develop).

My middle school team did this to win a game once. Ran back for a safety about on our own 40.
Eta: I think the situation was 4thI down with a few seconds left. Didn't want to punt and chance the return or give.them a hail Mary shot.

Throw a fade to best receiver in endzone. Then onside kick. That or kick a field goal.

ending question to recent Freakonomics blog post, after being informed of rules regarding conversions. Above question is valid so how what's your strategy here?
Line up in punt formation. Put your best hands WR in the place of the punter and go max protect and let him scramble as long as possible without allowing him to get anywhere near field goal range for the other team. Whether he gains or loses yards isn't really that critical.
ETA: Just realized you were up by 4 so the FG range thing doesn't matter. Have him sprint toward your own goal line and take a safety by running out the back of the end zone.
Or just run a dive play or something. Kicking the field goal is the worst possible thing you can do.

Unless the player can run the Super Tecmo Bowl zig-zag, kick the fg. Even if the snap is bad or the kick is blocked, the odds of a TD return are very slim. If all of that did happen, there might be enough time left for one play after the change of possession.

Could a team not keep 10 blockers in to block for the QB and if the QB gets pressure throw the ball as high as possible through the goalposts. I think you could easily waste 12 seconds doing this and if they call Intentional Grounding...who cares

Set up a ton of blockers at different levels. Have your fastest player run all the way to teh endzone. Stand there till:
- time runs out
- defensive players get close, then just run out of the back of the endzone; no need to let them tackle you in the endzone
Running up the middle would be a very good option as well. It'll run off at least 4 seconds, and even if you don't score, they still need 9o or so yards for a TD, being down by 4.

run it back 92 yards and step out at the 1 yard line with the clock at :00

If you chose the turn and run tactic, couldn't you just line a WR VERY deep in your backfield and have the QB take the snap from shotgun and turn and complete a backwards pass to the deep-set WR, who basically has a 20-30 yard head start to your own goal line? I would think every QB/WR combo in the league could complete a 20-30 yard pass and catch so the risk of an incomplete (fumble) should be low.
Posted on 2/10/12 at 11:37 am to RonBurgundy
Running back for the safety would be retarded. If you got tackled at say the 20 yard line with one second left they have a shot at the end zone from the 20. No way I would risk that.

Actually, thinking about it. You could have 10 blockers in(basically in victory formation) and have them just absolutely hold the shite out of everyone. Throw them to the ground by their facemasks if they have to, chop block, cut block, whatever. As long as the clock hits zero after the play, the game is over because only a defensive penalty can prolong a game.
