When I first moved to Houston, my now wife and I were going meet some friends at Kirby Ice House to watch the divisional round against the Chiefs. I think kickoff was at like 2:30. She told me we were meeting them there right at 2:30. I remember telling her that was silly, it was going to be packed by that point and we would be standing squished somewhere. We walk in and the place is EMPTY. Got a nice table right in front of the TV right as they were kicking off. By the end of the first quarter the place was packed. I told my wife in Louisiana you would have had to been in that bar an hour or two before kickoff to get a table for a Saints playoff game.

Houston itself doesn't actually give a shite about the Texans.

The Texans just feel like the laziest branding in the league. The McNairs should've just paid whatever ransom was required to get the Oilers back.

It also doesn't help that they're still the newest team in the NFL (not counting relocations) so in a way they're still "the expansion team" in my eyes.

The other potential name for Houston was the Apollos.

I get it fits the theme... but that's bad.

Lazy? I say it’s just dumb. But Texas is always gonna be all about Texas. Let’s see how that would look around the rest of the league

AFC East
• Buffalo New Yorkers
• Miami Floridians
• New England New Englanders
• New York New Yorkers

AFC North
• Baltimore Marylanders
• Cincinnati Ohioans
• Cleveland Ohioans
• Pittsburgh Pennsylvanians

AFC South
• Houston Texans
• Indianapolis Hoosiers
• Jacksonville Floridians
• Tennessee Tennesseans

AFC West
• Denver Coloradans
• Kansas City Missourians
• Las Vegas Nevadans
• Los Angeles Californians

NFC East
• Dallas Texans
• New York New Yorkers
• Philadelphia Pennsylvanians
• Washington Washingtonians

NFC North
• Chicago Illinoisans
• Detroit Michiganders
• Green Bay Wisconsinites
• Minnesota Minnesotans

NFC South
• Atlanta Georgians
• Carolina Carolinians
• New Orleans Louisianans
• Tampa Floridians

NFC West
• Arizona Arizonans
• Los Angeles Californians
• San Francisco Californians
• Seattle Washingtonians

The Texans are like a generic version of a real team.

Plus Texas is all about Dem Boys.

Later used by the Orlando franchise in the short-lived AAF (due to its proximity to the Kennedy Space Center):

Steve Spurrier was the coach.

I was telling someone this the other day. Close city. Loved the Bun Phillips, Earl Campbell Oilers. I want to be a fan but just feel nothing.

1. That name actually was a thing back in the ABA in the late 1960s:

Later started playing all over the state and changed their name to The Floridians, and changed their color scheme from blue and orange to magenta and orange:

The Miami Heat has worn throwback tribute version of that uniform:

2. "Texans" has a LOT of precedent. The NFL had a Dallas Texans franchise that only lasted ONE YEAR in 1952. And the AFL had the Dallas Texans from 1960-63:

Later moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs with just a change of the logo. Chiefs have worn Texans throwbacks in the past:

3. There was also a "Dallas Texans" franchise in the Arena Football in the early 1990s:

4. Also, the WFL in the mid-70s had TWO "state name" teams. One was, in fact, the Houston Texans:

They actually moved to Shreveport and became the "Shreveport Steamer"

The other WFL state name team was this one, based in Honolulu:

5. Finally, when the CFL added a few American teams in the 1990s, for one year there existed the San Antonio Texans:

Worth noting, if both Houston and Buffalo manage to win this weekend, AFC Championship will be in Houston.

I wholeheartedly agree with the Oiler fans above. I still get misty eyed when I remember the sesquicentennial opening of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo when we in the crowd politely applauded the governor, and then Bum Phillips entered the stadium and the place erupted, every man woman and child stood up and cheered loudly for our favorite coach.
And Earl Campbell but not quite so loud.

So watching Pittsburg last night and kind of wanting the Steelers to win was a massive "how things have changed" moment. Why the Steelers? Because they weren't the Texans.

Should've been the Houston Apollos instead of the Texans.
