Schools like Iowa state will have choices to make around the other sports
Iowa State and most of the Big 12 schools have all but made the decision to put basketball first, anything for football will be gravy.

He made $5MM at Iowa state and can stay there as long as he wants. It’s not that much more money after taxes and a hell of a lot more risk to get fired.
They doubled his salary to $10m per year. What are you even talking about saying it's not that much more?

Also a hell of a lot more upside at PSU. They’re giving him $17 million a year for his coaching and support staff. His coaching staff at ISU wasn’t even making $4.5 million a year combined.

The current state of college football will kill programs like this. A place where 2 and 3 star kids could get scholarships or walk on and be part of something.

First I saw was $8MM, which isn’t even a net of $2MM a year. See what his guarantee is. He could stay at Iowa state another 20 years and take incremental bumps and have an easy life. He’s a family man that likes the pace and culture at Iowa State.
See how he likes it when people talk shite about him and his family for losing to Michigan State and want him run out of town over and over. The expectations and pressure will increase exponentially, and he’s never experienced it as a coach, and only as a freshman who was a benchwarmer on a 2-9 team at Pitt before he transferred to a D3 power. Lot of big nose Jersey and East PA trash at Penn state, not the aw shucks folksy kind in Ames.

To me that speaks to where ISU is and what I was saying about him leaving for more resources.

He knows this is the death knell for them. Campbell was a goober that liked the rural life in Ames. He is their savior and the only coach who has been able to be consistently competitive there.
He is leaving because he knows they can’t compete, they’re already forecasting massive budget shortfalls, and he has dick for NIL. Small state like Iowa can’t realistically support multiple major programs in this climate. Iowa is lapping them with resource availability.

Which state/era of CFB didn't kill Iowa State?
In their entire history they've appeared in 19 bowl games and gone 6-13
They've played football since the late 1800s
They've won 2 conference championships in that 150 year history, with the last one being in 1912 (Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association)
Otherwise, they've won a division ONCE, in the 2004 Big12.
They've finished ranked 4 times in their program's history.

You know nothing about Campbell or Iowa in general. People that are beloved there are treated like royalty, and he is beyond beloved at Iowa state. He’s turned down offers to leave and even declined interviewing at places like USC because the culture and fit at USC and in LA isn’t what he wants in life. He’s a boring Midwestern family guy who wants an ordinary stable life for his family above all else. Penn state is a school on the farm, so that’s probably a big draw outside of the money.
And it’s not cliche speak with him, it’s real. He was a guy that would end up a statue outside Jack Trice in Ames had he rode out a career there, probably worth $75MM, by just averaging 7 wins with a spike year every 4-5 where they contend for a playoff berth. He knows that playoff berth is a long shot in this climate and getting harder by the year.
He isn’t doing this for money. He doesn’t need it. He’s already super rich in Iowa. The money for him is the insurance policy for what he’s giving up in legacy.

They've set this thing up to be a 30-team semi-pro sports league, and smaller schools will eventually just say to hell with it and dump sports.
Dump some sports but not football. Football means money.

Obviously Iowa State is in a much better situation than someone like ULM, but the "not quite there" teams in college sports are only going to get closer to the "no chance in hell" teams
Maybe, maybe not. Indiana and Texas Tech have places at the table and they were forever in the "no chance in hell" category. Some schools go up. Some schools go down. Most stay the same like always.

He's leaving b/c PSU was so desperate they had to give him an 8 year deal.
And LSU gave Kiffin a 7 year deal and $100 mil or so...is there something desperate about that extra year?

Eventually things grow stale. ADs get ambitious. Ticket sales flag. Even in lowly Iowa. There was no guarantee that Iowa State would've been content to merely be on the upside of water forever. Might as well make a business decision for your family. Go big before you cash out. See if you have what it takes to win at the highest level. Look at how Southern Miss did the loyal Jeff Bower.
