More than enough room on either side of Raymond James and you can squeeze a baseball stadium downtown much more easily than any other venue.

I know nothing about this land in particular but this seems like a decent spot

Tampa Bay, Miami, Oakland, and Toronto have all averaged fewer people per home game this year than 4 SEC baseball teams

Holy cow, if true baseball may be heading for a contraction down the road if that continues

So weird. Their metro area has a population well over 2 million people and the city unabashedly supports the Bucs and Lightning.

Not really. Have you ever been to a game? I interned in Tampa in college. The stadium is in a terrible location. Aside from the fact that the stadium is a dump and is in the middle of nowhere, it’s basically directly across the bay from Tampa proper. We went to a bunch of games and never made it to the stadium in under an hour and a half. People that work in the city are not making a night game.

Either build a stadium downtown on the waterfront or out by Raymond James. There’s plenty of room. The Yankees spring training facility is right across the hwy from RJS, and it’s arguably nicer than the Trop

Maybe an outdoor stadium in Tampa would be more feasible or an outdoor stadium in St. Pete? The area is definitely growing too.
they have tried. Its gone nowhere every time. Most recently the Ybor stadium that fell apart a couple years ago

Rays will be the expos in 5 years

It's one of the easiest sporting venues to get into. Affordable parking literally right outside the door. It's all ground level doors as well so you walk right to the building and inside much like a retail store. If they are referring to traffic; perhaps, but show me a stadium that doesn't lead to traffic snarls in the immediate area before/after an event.

This has always been an issue. There's basically one way into St Pete from the Tampa side and no one likes the drive. A friend of mine puts it this way: Tampa is a medium sized city that still has small city infrastructure.

And they play in the AL East, so you would think playing the Yankees and Red Sox a lot, would attract a lot of people to those games, and other games against big AL teams

That's the only time The Trop is sold out or nearly sold out. Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, and Phillies games are always guaranteed sell outs. With the Chicago teams and Detroit close sell outs. I lived in the Tampa area for 10 years of my life and my parents are still there. I truly believe the only people in the area that really wanted a team were those people from up north to watch their old teams play. My family is guilty of this as Yankees and Mets fans. If the Rays move to Hillsborough, attendance will jump up by 10K.

80% of this problem is that they play in St Pete. The other 20% is that the trop is a dump. It's absolutely unbearable to get over during rush hour. I grew up in Lakeland and it takes at least 90 minutes to get there from my parent's house and it's bumper to bumper 35mph traffic the whole way. Contrast that with it taking 45 minutes to get to Channelside (with a million things to do) for a Lightning game or 60 minutes to get to Ray Jay for a Bucs game.

They need to figure out how to get that stadium into Ybor City or try to build something out at the fair grounds. The trop was built 30 years ago when there were half as many people living in the area but the same roads as they have now. It just doesn't work.
