Ya, people act like buffoons. The older I get the more I realize that 15% of the population is holding everything together.

mean really, when was the last time the n word was thrown at an athlete and they heard it/reacted to it? Anyone know, because there is one thing you can't say to a black athlete and get away with it

I don't know if it really compares, but you should look up some of the shite black soccer players in Europe have to deal with

There's been a couple of instances of guys just walking off of the field because of it

I think anyone kicking someone's arse over something they said is a bit childish, but this whole thing is being way overblown. Smart just pushed the guy, and not even that hard (looks like he put all of his arm strength into it, but none of his body weight).

ETA: I have ESPN on mute in the background while I do work/listen to music/browse TD, and literally every time I look back to the TV they're talking about it. Insanity.

I don't think it does because we are not like those euro shite heads.

Maybe counterintuitive, but this is an example of why I don't think it was used tonight. You say the n word to Marcus smart you aren't getting away with it after that slight push. He is going to wail on that guy.

I'm not surprised a black guy in Europe just walks off, they hear that crap 10x more over there.

The fan seems to have a reputation of being a douche. Marcus doesn't seem like the kind of guy to fly off the handle and push someone for no reason. I'm guessing this guy crosses some line in with his words. The fan needs to have his tickets revoked (If I were TTU, I'd keep the money and tell him to piss off and come back next year) and Smart needs to do community service. Suspending him from games does nothing. He's there to play basketball, so let him hold up that bargain and have him do some community service for a few hours.

I don't agree. Smart should be suspended at least two games for going into the stands. Every kid in HS will be pulling a Ron Artest now.

In what world is it acceptable for a fan to abuse an amateur athlete? Smart is a teenager, this fan was a middle aged man, he should be ashamed of himself.

After reading the entire thread, it's amazing that we've completely missed the point of the whole thing.

We know this or can assume this beyond reasonable doubt: Smart, a college student, fell into the spectators during gameplay. Orr, a 1983 Texas Tech graduate, said something, and Smart rose to his feet and confronted him. Orr made the "talk to the hand" gesture while saying "You're not my type." Smart shoved Orr in reaction, resulting in a technical foul as per Big 12 rules.

For an post-college adult to say anything directed to a downed college player other than something of a positive nature like "Are you ok?" is way out of line as well as ludicrously immature. Furthermore, for a man meeting Orr's description ever to taunt anything personal to a college student is similarly out of line and immature. This incident notwithstanding, Orr is a complete moron with no life who deserves a lot more than he got from Smart last night. The fact that Texas Tech has encouraged Orr in this type of behavior in the past is ridiculous, and college fans everywhere should be more vocal about how pathetic and unfunny and sad the Jeff Orrs of the world are.

Regarding Smart, he was taunted while he was down. I have no problem with his confronting the man who so taunted him. If Orr made contact with his left hand to Smart's face, I have no problem with the physical reaction. If Smart felt an immediate threat of contact by the left hand, I have no problem with the physical reaction. If there was no contact or threat of contact, I have a problem with the physical reaction and think Smart should issue an apology to Texas Tech and the Big 12, but not to Orr.

My verdict:
Ban Orr from courtside for taunting a college player while he was on the floor at his feet. Issue no further punishment to Smart at least until we determine whether Orr made physical contact or if there was an immediate threat of physical contact.

It's time for adults at college games to act like adults. frick Jeff Orr, and frick anyone who is past his college years who ever shouts anything personal and negative at a college player.
quote:

@PaulPabst: Funny how the 20 year old player has to show restraint, but the 50 year old fan does not.
ETA: Smart was assessed a technical foul as per Big 12 rules. Unless he is arrested and charged with assault, or unless Orr (or the lady next to him) files suit against Smart, or unless the Big 12 opens a case on the matter, then whatever happens to Smart is none of anybody's business outside the OSU program. I'm fine letting it go at this point, but I hope Orr is dealt with.

THAT

dude is in his 50s and drives from Waco to Lubbock once a week and wherever else they play every game to see college basketball... some of those players are 18 years old and one year out of high school and high school fans get called pathetic on here when they go to games in their hometown when they're just sitting watching the game, not being obnoxious like this mf,.

look at it this way. the fan gets one opportunity every few years while sitting that close to confront a player in that situation, he does it, and them winning a close game with under 10 seconds left was a major factor in this. he does nothing if they're winning or losing by 20. Marcus Smart goes into the stands 2 or 3 times a game and how often does this happen?

that man was def. flapping his gums. you want to act hard do that at a pro game with more expensive tickets and bigger players that get paid

I respect your viewpoints. Simply put, you go into the stands and put your hand on someone, there should be a price to pay period. Both men are adults.

Smart gots his feelings hurt and pushed a fan. not cool. If the fan were to come down and kick Smart or physically grab or hit him, then Smart might have had an argument. Smart should be reprimanded.

He already paid the price. He was assessed a technical foul. That part of the matter rests with his team and school now.

If Orr or the woman do not press assault charges, there officially is no more price to be paid. (Even if they do press charges, there may be no price to be paid.)

You don't know that.

Right. A technical foul was given.

They're both adults, so I will treat them equally here. Orr taunted him while he was down, and Smart confronted him. Orr raised his hand to Smart, and Smart made physical contact.

I am not above doing what Smart did (though I definitely do not like it), and no matter what any of the Residents of Mount Pious say, neither is anyone.

I am above everything Orr did. Anyone who isn't is a moron.

Furthermore, I want to point out that I have not discussed race and racial language in this thread because I simply don't know anything to that effect on the matter (shame on anyone who has speculated on this without knowledge), but I will say, on the other hand, that Orr is such a scumbag that a part of me enjoys seeing him accused of being a gigantic racist. He definitely deserves this, and I hope this situation ruins college sports for him for the rest of his life; his is among the worst kinds of people at sporting events.

Orr is seen on YouTube yelling at and flipping off players. He's a big dirtbag no doubt. In the heat of battle a 20's age man lost it briefly. Don't make more of it than a momentary lapse in a heated competition. I'm more disturbed by superfan and his need to goad college age players. Athletics has lost its place of relevance in society, idiots like Orr are far too common and should be escorted out and banned.

Meh. You don't want to get your arse kicked, don't provoke people. Smart should be praised for shutting up a useless loudmouth fan.

Moreover, Texas Tech should be reprimanded for not only allowing, but also encouraging, the behavior Orr is known to display. It's creepy, pathetic, and inappropriate.
