Just heard about this. Mickey Lolich passed away. Was the hero of the '68 World Series. Won the 7th game vs. Bob Gibson. Was mostly not mentioned before that series because Denny McClain won 31 games that year, but earned his fame as a result of the series. Pitched 3 complete game wins in that series.
I recall following the box scores for this series in the daily paper as the games were played during the day.

I believe he ended up owning a donut shop in Detroit after retirement.

Thoughts and prayers for Mickey Lolich and his family. May he rest in peace and enjoy eternal life with Jesus Christ our Lord and Father.
I was a kid during this World Series and followed Detroit Tigers back then. What a great picture.
God bless Mickey Lolich.

In 68 I had just started 8th grade. Since these were day games, the only way to hear the game was to cut school and find a radio broadcast. The next day's paper was the best method to catch up on the details.
If my memory is correct, McClain started games 1, 4, and 6, loosing the first two. The decision to start him in game 6 was somewhat of a surprise and the Cardinals assumed that he was being saved for game 7. The Tiger's won game 6 and that meant Lolich vs. Gibson in game 7. Time to go to the internet to confirm my memory!

Just noticed this from the ESPN article:
It wasn't as nice as a 69 Vette, but the old Dodge Charger's were much different than they are now.

Lolich pitched Game 7 after only two days of rest. He figured he would get a Corvette from General Motors for being the Series MVP but had to settle for a Dodge Charger GT because Chrysler was the sponsor in 1968

This is correct. I grew up not terribly far from it.

-when he retired he had more Ks than any lefty in baseball history
-after his baseball career was over he owned and ran a doughshop for 20 years

I was in 8th grade and one of my teachers was also the basketball coach. He let us watch some of the game instead of having a regular class day. Good memory of that day. Thanks Coach Monroe where ever you are.

I remember him hitting a home run in game 2.

Yes - correct - forgot about that.
And after reading more about that series, I forgot that Gibson had 17 strikeouts in game 1. And both McClain and Lolich pitched and won games 6 & 7 on 2 days rest.

Forgot to add - that was the only homer of his career.
