Cardinals closing in on free-agent catcher Willson Contreras, sources tell @TheAthletic.

It sucks, but the Cubs brass does not like the way he frames pitches. He's not the style catcher that they want.

Didn't he DH more than he caught last year. I think the reason is not only pitch framing, but calling a game and his throwing really regressed. He was flat out a poor defensive catcher the last couple of years.

The rumor mill was that the reason there wasn't more interest from playoff contending teams for WC40 at the deadline last year is no one really trusted him with their staffs in the playoffs. Astros were going to play him mostly at other positions had they gotten him.

This is also true. The only real offer was from the Astros and Dusty Baker blocked it because he didn't want the distraction of a player in a contract year who wanted to play everyday.

I am in the minority of Cub fans who was not at all upset with not extending him.

A Cub friend of mine kept saying - who are we going to get at catcher who is better.

My answer was as far as hitting goes not very many options, but as far as defensively in all that entails almost everybody. And if you compare him to other DH's which is where he played more last year, his offensive numbers were pretty average.

Hey, maybe he'll rededicate himself to the craft of catching in St. Louis. But the fact that he even has to do that is to me telling.

Flubs lose Contreras for a draft pick when they should have got a lot more at the trade deadline. But he sure will look good in a new red hat.

hey they tried, wasn't alot of interest, his defensive matrix as a catcher are at the bottom of MLB. Astros talked but ultimately thought he'd be upset because they were not planning on him being a full-time player.

Now maybe he'll re-dedicate himself to the craft of catching in St. Louis. As I said in a previous post, the fact that he will have to do that would not sit well with me if I were a Tards fan.

5 / 87.5 is a lot of money for someone you HOPE will improve defensively AND continue to hit.

No doubt - Astros didn't even think he was an every day player for them.

I like that teams are spending more but MLB still needs competitive balance.

The Pirates are already done before Spring Training

The penalties aren't harsh enough for going past the lux tax. Need to start banning teams from the draft and INT signings completely if they exceed the tax signing players from other teams.

Yankees will regret going 9 years. Judge has more injury history than Pujols did when he signed.

I am surprised Bell and Quintana only got 2 years.
