In '95 6-4-1 Notre Dame played the #4 ranked team in the country in the Fiesta Bowl but the system was fine then.
In 93 ND beat FSU H2H and finished with the same record but FSU was named the national champion. H2H is all that matters, so need to retroactively give ND another title.

Hurting themselves. Since they don't have a conference to bowl revenue share. They're essentially forfeiting a $4-5 million payout.

ACC sure loves ND when it is beneficial for them, but turns on them anytime it’s convenient. Part of the “weak schedule” is the ACC’s fault as well. BC, Syracuse, and NC State were all part of their deal. Look at the crap teams they have from the ACC next season. The deal was worth it when Clemson was good and Jimbo was at FSU, but the ACC is atrocious now, and there’s not really any hope it’s better going forward.
Notre dame took the offer to be a rented whore for the ACC because they’re the only broke arse league that would stoop so low so ND could have some BS barometer at selection time

Bowl games don't mean shite anymore
I’ve never understood this take.
There are now more meaningful bowl games than any prior year due to 12 team playoffs in those bowl games. The meaningless bowls that were always meaningless still have teams playing in them. I’m not going to lose my shite over Notre Dame opting out. Their loss.
They lose potential revenue. They missed out on an opportunity for additional media exposure (and now face negative media attention), an opportunity for additional alumni engagement (to build NIL money), and miss out on additional opportunity to build recruiting buzz.
frick em.

ND is making a mistake. The extra practices and the game are important for next year. If you have 100 guys on the team you can play a bowl game even if a lot players opt out or don't play because they want to be healthy for next year.
I think ND needs to rethink their "arrangement" with the ACC and the ACC needs to tell ND to be a full member or get out.

If ND ends their relationship with the ACC, who are they going to schedule games against with the SEC and Big 10 playing 9 game conference schedules?

When ND was an independent they never had trouble scheduling games against other teams in conferences. They used to play Michigan, Michigan State, and Purdue to start the year and then filled their scheduled with USC, Navy, Army, Boston College, Air Force, Pitt, and other schools. ND will not have trouble scheduling other Big Ten and SEC schools. Historically, ND has not played many schools in the SEC and the ACC.

This is a retarded argument. There are more people than ever.

And no conference to fine them
And no conference to protect them when all of their opponents next year cancel the games. Be funny as hell Notre Dame had to scrimage themselves 12 times.

We’re living in very different times.

With both conferences now playing 9 game conference games, they’re going to have a problem.

From now on, "Wake up the echoes" will include "that time Notre Dame quit".

Hopefully, this is merely Notre Dame throwing a fit, rather than the beginning of a trend.
Fortunately, for this year, it feels more like the latter; but as someone who grew up loving and appreciating the difference between college football and the professional game, the death of bowl season would be yet another disheartening domino to fall.

I have it on good authority from LSU fans that a MOU is not legally binding.

ND played in the national championship last year and looked like they were a near-lock to make the CFP for a month. Absolutely zero alumni give a frick about skipping the pop tarts or cheez-it bowl.
ND just landed the #3 recruiting class. And absolutely zero future recruits give a frick about ND skipping the pop tarts or cheez-it bowl.
ND always has media attention. Which is part of the reason ND was played like a fiddle by the committee / on ESPN’s worthless weekly show. Now, ESPN does give a frick about ND skipping. Who cares? Screw ‘em.
ND’s starting center tore his ACL in October. ND’s starting LB tore his ACL against Syracuse. ND’s TE tore his achilles last year in the Sugar Bowl.
ND doesn’t need to play an exhibition with half its starters opting out and the other half risking losing their 2026 season just for the opportunity to eat a sacrificial pop tart.

NIL should be a contract. If you don't play every game you forfeit the entirety of your payments.

A newsy wrinkle from Bevacqua: As part of an MOU signed last spring, Notre Dame is assured of a CFP berth if it is ranked in the top 12 starting next year.
If this year’s situation unfolds next year, the final at-large team (Miami) would have gotten bumped for No. 11 Notre Dame.
In that case, all the committee would have to do is put them lower in the rankings.

You should certainly lose one game check if you opt out when healthy
