He absolutely was.
I think how things turned out was tragic, because the man actually did play the game like it should be played.
But his demons, most notably gambling, got the best of him.
The author of the recent biography I mentioned presented solid, compelling evidence that Pete was getting over his head with gambling, including on baseball, and with running around with some pretty nasty hard cases as far back as the early 1970s, and the Reds had wind of it, but couldn’t do anything because Pete was a god in Cincinnati and his attitude was “I’m Pete Rose and I hit .300 and get 200 hits and hustle and I can do what I want.”
I’m quite sure that Johnny Bench had his own egotistical moments, but according to the author that is at the core of his issues with Pete, the brazenness of Pete’s “I do what I want” attitude.

Which is like spitting in the man’s face. If I were his family, I’d tell the Baseball Hall of Fame to frick off.

A sworn statement by an unidentified woman, contained in a motion filed Monday in John Dowd's defense against Pete Rose's defamation lawsuit, alleges that Rose had a sexual relationship with the woman for several years in the 1970s, beginning before she turned 16. In the majority of states, including Ohio -- where both the woman and Rose lived at the time -- the age of legal consent is 16, so her allegation amounts to statutory rape.

Rose acknowledged he had a sexual relationship with the woman in court documents made public Monday, but he said his information and belief was that it started when she was 16. He was 34, married and the father of two children in 1975, when he says he began having sex with the woman, referred to in the filing as "Jane Doe." Rose said he does not recall how long the relationship lasted.

Drop all the post-playing career stuff, if I wanted to show a kid what baseball is all about, I’d show him film on Pete.

We are in agreement there.

Never heard this but as wrong as it may be, doesn’t take away from his career.
Is it fricked up, sure but everyone has skeletons in their closet.

Which in todays game wouldn’t be surprising at all. Hell, look at all the shite going on today in any pro sport.

i remember watching that game as a child.
I remember being in Atlanta watching the Braves on WTBS and every time Rose would come up to bat they would switch to the Reds broadcast to see if he got the record breaker.

For what it’s worth TMZ which has really good sources on such things is saying someone came in and found him dead. He was OK yesterday at a public appearance in Nashville although he was in a wheelchair. When you’re in your 80s your number can come up at any time, famous or not.

Back in the day my summer league baseball team traveled to some cities and we went to Riverfront and saw Pete and the Reds play. I bought a Reds jersey and just had it out today. Sort of ironic.
