Was there a similar narrative against Kansas State in 1998 from the media? From your anecdotes I've read on this forum, they were clearly America's team much like how Indiana is now.

Eh no. Not with everything that’s come out about their roster in the last few weeks. Probably around 70ish-30ish in favor of them now.

Miami seemed to have such trashy fans when we played them.
Jerry springer show vibes
I do like the current coach for the Canes however.

K-State did it "the old fashioned way!" (not really, they raided other Schools and JCs for players to jump start the moribund program)...But at least there was no NIL and we lived under a cover of hidden impropriety....so it was "true" Cinderella in the public's mind.
In contrast, Indiana is weirdly basically being passive-aggressively BLAMED for all that's wrong with CFB today....OR, "this is not good Joe public, this is bad, its not Cinderella fellas!". This is not orderly, it doesn't match my historic expectations!
While Blue bloods and fans of Blue bloods and marketers of Blue bloods like ESPN and legacy media cry in the rain. Indiana just played by the new now rules but is doing it better than everyone else and the usual suspects are in stage 3 of Grief and taking their anger out on Indiana.

we never knew where a title winner would come from
In the 1970s things were much more predictable.
Pittsburgh is the only outlier on this list.
1979 Alabama AP, FWAA, NFF, UPI
1978 Alabama, Southern California AP, FWAA, NFF, UPI
1977 Notre Dame AP, FWAA, NFF, UPI
1976 Pittsburgh AP, FWAA, NFF, UPI
1975 Oklahoma AP, FWAA, NFF, UPI
1974 Southern California, Oklahoma FWAA, NFF, UPI, AP
1973 Notre Dame, Alabama AP, FWAA, NFF, UPI
1972 Southern California AP, FWAA, NFF, UPI
1971 Nebraska AP, FWAA, NFF, UPI
1970 Nebraska, Texas, Ohio State

What came out? So what if their guys are a little older than we’re used to. Everyone plays by those rules now

23-25 year olds shouldn’t make up the bulk of any college football roster.

Actually I do not. I couldn't careless about minorities

Haven’t you heard? They’re winning because they’re cheating by taking late in career guys who weren’t stars and putting them in a system that relies on everyone doing their jobs. It’s just not fair.

Can't wait till Indiana fans tell Miami, "Hoosier daddy"

It’s probably because Indiana was a number one seed and Miami barely made the playoffs
This is a fair point imo. When the playoffs expanded to 12 teams, a common complaint was teams ranked that low had no business trying to stake a claim to the NC and even when there were four teams there was usually a participant that was blown out or demonstrated they had no right to be there.
Not only was Miami the last team in but they had to bump them over another team that was rated higher the week before. So them winning the tournament and toppling a 15-0 #1 seed would be a significant talking point and justification for the expanded playoffs.
That's one of the things that makes March Madness so special - the knowledge that a 3-8 seed CAN win it all.

Media interest is in eyeballs, not human interest stories.
Miami is something like 18th on its own; before accounting for the rest of the state, which holds 13, 17, 39 41, 55, 58, 105
Indiana is Indianapolis at 25, South Bend-Elkhart at 99, Evansville at 107, and Fort Wayne at 108.
This is all before you get to the team that has a nearly 50 year long national fan following, that has won a handful of national titles, and that has an easy to package return to glory story that the prime audiences are much better situated to absorb.
This isn't rocket science folks. There is a reason why USC gets talked up every year, regardless of the quality of their football. Eyeballs are what matters to these people.

While living in Florida, i noticed this quickly. When Canes were shite, those flags and hats, n stuff went into closet, and the FSU and Florida gator gear was out in full force.
One of biggest band wagon fan bases in CFB, next to USC and UCLA. NO one gives a shite about them, till they are winning, then the celebutards and cfb media on west coast are sockling their nuts
Yea, it is a smallish, ritzy private school....makes sense

Indiana winning the NC is greater than Mississippi State winning it all. IU hasn't been relevant for nearly 60 years. Indiana's historical winning percentage is .430. They're truly a terrible football program.
Indiana Sucks
