25% of them, which is so wild. Granted, 2 stayed on for the playoffs at least but it shows what a broken system it is.

the issue is having backups leave before the playoffs just because of how the schedule is set up is really crappy for

If they don't transfer now, they can't enroll in class to be eligible for spring ball at the new school.

But they aren't there to play school, which makes it all very dumb.

Ole Miss’ 6th OL just entered the portal and left the team before a semifinal game. You’re correct to some degree.

sad. those dudes still had to grind in the weight room and at practices and should be able to participate, but can’t just because of the arbitrary calendar assigned by the playoffs and the portal

Its all about money

It’s all about money and opportunity for the players and coaches, and winning and entertainment for the fans.

If Alabama had a 5th year senior QB from Tuscaloosa (solid but not great) who was in line to be the starter and the program could replace him with some stud out of the portal who might win another game or two, you better believe they would make a change and the fans would support it. Same goes for every other SEC program.

People are only as loyal as their options.

I'm much more of a casual fan than I used to be, and I would never give my hard earned money to pay an 18 year old a million dollars for 6 months

ESPN networks saw a 13% year-over-year viewership increase, on pace for their best season since 2011

I assume that's for the entire CFB season, not just the playoffs.

how has playoff viewership been this year compared to last? I'd have to think the Tulane/OM and Oregon/JMU games had pretty dreadful ratings. And Miami is the closest thing to a national following left in the CFP, but I'm not sure they even are at that level anymore like they were 20 years ago.

Blame it on the timing of the system, but the Oregon RB entering the portal tells you all you need to know.

Harris might play. He's been practicing.

It is. This is what I found for the first two rounds. 7% decrease in 1st round games. 14% increase in quarterfinal games. 3% overall increase so far.
quote:

College Football Playoff (CFP) ratings are strong, with quarterfinal viewership up 14% year-over-year, averaging 19.3 million viewers, driven by big games like Indiana vs. Alabama in the Rose Bowl (24.9M viewers). This surge helped offset a slight first-round decline (down 7%) due to NFL competition, bringing the overall two-round average to 14.4 million, a 3% increase from last year, showing strong engagement for the expanded 12-team format.

blame the stupid fricking rules makers, who allowed the portal to open before the season is even fricking over.

cfb deserves to fail, and fail badly.

I still watch because it’s football, but I definitely don’t have the same passion for it like I once did. Everyone is making money and getting paid so it’s going to take powerful people like Saban to make noise for a little common sense to take hold.

People like simplistic sayings like this but there is more to it. The transfer portal is only open for 2 weeks and those 2 weeks are now. There is a difference between some one saying I’m leaving school X because school Y will pay me $1 more and a 3rd 4th string player staying for maybe 1 more game and missing the opportunity to play more and secure his future for another year.

The calendar is supposed to work around school so the football players can participate in the class. I’m sure about 10% actually attend class.

I’d say I still pay attention, but I’m not particularly invested in any of it.

From the top down, it’s every man for himself, and for me, it’s weirdly transparent. Like watching a stage play where the 4th wall just disappears. I just don’t really want to engage any deeper than “oh this is interesting”.

I’m sure they’ll still get views from people who enjoy the spectacle, but it will be interesting to see what happens when they run out of people who genuinely care about it.
