Forgive me. When I ask about where did it go wrong, I do so under the context of under the assumption that a lot of people where expecting a major dynastic type run from this core and coaching staff/front office. Maybe I am wrong to do so.

But I also ask the question because it really does seem like the organization has taken a step back from being an organization that I had full faith in going forward to being a year in, year out WS contender to one where I feel like they have some decisions to make going forward

They have definitely not been "bad", but am I wrong to feel like these last three years have been somewhat lacking? If I am then I'll take this L

It’s really just this year that’s been underwhelming to me. I do think it’s partially a result of some poor moves though. They won 95 games last year, were in NLCS year before that

I also think how last year ended, plus their weird winter, has impacted my view somewhat

He's saved the bullpen multiple times this year and has ate innings. He's 3rd or 4th in bullpen IP. Not sure how you DFA that considering his usefulness in this shitty bullpen

Who are the next guys coming up through the system? I know fangraphs isn't super high on it right now but I feel like that can change quickly

. I just feel like they’ve made a few bad deals in FA that’s limited their flexibility and put a ceiling on what they can accomplish currently.

Darvish has a 2.77 ERA in 8 starts since July 1 after "finding his release point". He is the Cubs best pitcher all of a sudden.

63 Ks, 2 BB in 48 IP
.201 avg against
.234 OBP against
.380 slg against

Chatwood has been valuable albeit overpaid

One issue is the bullpen, starting with the Brandon Morrow signing. Second issue would be too much swing and miss and the development of some of the young hitters.

How many NL teams have more wins than the cubs since 2015? Probably just the Dodgers

I think this is a valid thread. The Cubs have been in no way bad, but in 2016 they looked like a potential juggernaut and likely the premier franchise in the league the next few years. In terms of current major league talent and farm systems, at the very least the Yankees, Astros and Dodgers have clearly surpassed them though.

Quintana wasn’t great last year but overall has pretty much been what they traded for Way too early to make a judgment on Eloy but he wouldn’t have made a difference for them the past few years unless you think he could have headlined a deal for someone else, which might be true.

I forgot about Morrow too

I don’t know a ton about the current Cubs prospects but I like Hoerner and it seems like he could make a difference as soon as next year.

Nico Hoerner, Adbert Azolay, Miguel Amaya have been the steady guys getting accolades. Brennen Davis is a prep bat gaining a lot of steam, as is international guy Brailyn Marquez.

They have some college arms who should be ok, considering they havent developed any pitching in the past few years

Nico Hoerner, Brennan Davis, Brailyn Marquez, Miguel Amaya, Alzolay who debuted earlier this year

first 3 guys taken in 19' draft look to be trending upward

Hoerner offers bat to ball skills and position flexibility. He will probably look to absorb a Zobrist type role in the near future

The big riser is Brennan Davis. Athletic 6'4" prep kid outta of AZ, he was torching A ball this year at 19 before getting hurt.

One word: Complacency.

From the top of the organization to the bottom. It seems like once they won the world series, their job was done.

I listened to a Cubs podcast this morning that addressed this question. The hosts made the point that in 2013-2016, the Cubs front office was ahead of most others in advance metrics, especially when applying them at the minor league level. Since then, they felt the front office has fallen behind teams like the Astros and Dodgers in this department. They also made the point that when the young core all came up together in 2015-2016, opposing teams didn't have great scouting reports. Since then, teams have adjusted and the front office being behind in scouting, metrics, etc has caused the players to not progress as much as expected. I don't know how accurate most of that is, but it made a little sense to me.

Having said that, I don't think anything has "all gone wrong" yet. Would it surprise anyone if they won the division and made it to the NLCS this year? The bullpen needs to be rebuilt this off-season, and they need to find a CF and a 2B, but if they plug those holes, they should be up there again the next 2 years. They also need a front line starter by 2021 to replace Lester.

Castellanos being a beast made this move possible.

I still think Russell should replace Descalso for good, regardless of when he comes back.

Darvish is actually pitching like he is worth the contract - which has taken him off the hook. Chatwood will never live up to his contract, but at least he has been a huge plus lately.

The problem is the road record. Cubs are a great team at home, but on the road they are terrible. Why? Hard to say.
