So the St. Mary's and Toldedo's of the world can call themselves the Champion of the Insignia Computer Speakers Bowl, or some shite like that.

Yeah it's so much better having zero college football on vs a regionally-compelling bowl game.
I freakin love small bowls! These teams play their entire season with the goal of making it to a bowl game. Then they get their reward, to play on national tv for the first time. It's great to watch.
What I hate is bowl that chooses a terrible team just because they're a bigger name. Choosing a 6-6 Illinois vs a 8-4 Akron or something. The smaller schools don't get to buy a few wins, they have to go play big schools for pay-days. So essentially a 6-6 Illinois, is 3-6 plus three rent-a-wins. A 8-4 Akron is actually 10-1 but they had to go play Ohio State etc.
All of these bowls are doing their best to make good match-ups. People like you they will never be able to please. Fans of the actual game think they're doing fine.

Because crappy bowls have better ratings than regular season basketball.
EG: with both games being played at the same time, the New Mexico Bowl had a better rating than Butler's upset of #1Indiana.

I'm pretty sure Death to the BCS showed ESPN gets solid ratings and makes a ton of cash off them. I think they own every bowl but the Cotton and one or two others. There is no pushback at the schools, even if they lose money on them. The coach gets a bonus, kids and administrators get a vacation. If you hate bowl games, you hate America.
Actually, I think most suck, but what else are you going to watch right now besides NFL?

Death to the BCS
Came in to recommend that book to the OP. It lays out how the system works quite well.
The bowls are bogus "charities" with massive administrative salaries and perks. The crappy bowls require the schools to buy thousands of tickets at face value. Then the schools can't sell the tickets and they lose money on the deal. But they go anyway so the AD can collect a bonus check.
Plus the conferences share revenue. So if Kentucky or Vandy takes a bath on going to the Bubba's Oil Change Bowl in Ooogaboogastan, they get a cut of the money LSU/Florida/Al Abama earned for going to the Sugar or BCSCG. At the end of the day, the good bowls subsidize the crappy ones.

Make Money:
ESPN - As said before, they get decent ratings and tons of promo time for future bowl games.
Sponsors - They wouldn't pay for naming rights otherwise.
Lose Money:
Cities - They pay to promote and operate the bowl and get minimal benefit in return.
Schools - They are forced to pay for seating allotment and team/band travel expenses. The expenses usually exceed the bowl payout

This really is the heart of it; why do they exist? Because people will watch them, in significant enough numbers to fuel the advertising dollars that make it all possible. If you didn't watch them, and the ratings plummeted, ESPN would not be able to charge the rates that sustain the model.
If you don't like it, don't watch any but the biggest of bowl games. The sport didn't arrive at this model by accident. It arrived here because of the viewing decisions of the college football audience.

La. Tech wishes they could go to a crappy bowl.

The Indy Bowl in Shreveport is probably one of the last remaining non-ESPN owned shitty bowls.
Sun Bowl- CBS has always had the rights

Why not, a major sponsor pays for everything invites two teams and all their fans, entertains its customers with a nice party.....it's all good.

We went to the Poinsettia Bowl in 2008. A crappy bowl I guess you would call it.
We were there for 6 days in San Diego. Got to go to the Zoo, Sea World, Indoor Go Kart Speedway, USS Midway, all for free. Stayed in a resort hotel, were fed great meals, if not we got money to go get food.
At night when there was nothing on the agenda they provided vans for us to transport us around where we wanted to go in the city.
For gifts we got an iPod Touch, $100 Best Buy Gift Card, a Fossil watch, and a bunch of clothes/gear.
Even though it was a crappy bowl, it was still a great experience and I had just as good of a time there as I did at the "big bowls" Fiesta and Rose Bowl.
Even though the Fiesta and Rose Bowls were better experiences and more "high class" when it came to what they provided us with and how we were treated, Poinsettia Bowl was still fun.
At this point its less about the game itself and more rewarding players for a good season with a trip and gifts as well as a game to play in.
To compare though, for the Rose Bowl we were there for 10 days and stayed at the JW Marriott by the staples center, got to go to Disney World, Bowling Alley, Lawry's, a Comedy Club run by old Chappelle's show cast members, and for gifts got $350 to spend on electronics/gadgets, a watch, a bunch of clothes/gear and some memorabilia. The difference between the BCS Bowls and the Poinsettia Bowl were the way we were treated by the staff and city. We got police escorts everywhere in Scottsdale/Los Angeles, and the bowl staf waited on us hand and foot. For example I left my camera at a hotel we had a breakfast at one morning, and the bowl staff tracked it down and got it back to me the next night.

What crappy bowl game you talking about?
I've enjoyed the bowl games so far.. I also enjoy the heck out of college football, so I'm not about to complain.
I've heard about some teams losing money, but I believe that's a crock of shite.
