Glad to see Sicario getting some love for sound editing/score.

Probably my most enjoyable theater experience of the year.

Ex Machina should have been nominated for way more than Visual Effects and Original Screenplay

* I have not seen Sicario or The Big Short, so my opinion may be stupid and incomplete.

BEST PICTURE - The Revanant

BEST ACTOR - Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - Tom Hardy, The Revenant

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight

DIRECTING - The Revenant

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM - Inside Out

COSTUME DESIGN - Mad Mad: Fury Road

MAKEUP AND HAIR STYLING - The Revenant

FILM EDITING - Mad Max: Fury Road

PRODUCTION DESIGN - Mad Max: Fury Road

VISUAL EFFECTS - Mad Max: Fury Road

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Ex Machina

The Martian is way too long and just seems like a movie Hollywood just blows themself over because of the names involved. It was just alright, seems very "in the moment."
No surprise that Damon is up for the Best Actor nominee, but his performance wasn't exactly awe-inspiring.
The only thing I could see it deservedly winning is maybe Sound Editing for a solid soundtrack.

The Revenant is the powerhouse of these awards imo.
Leo should have the win locked up, aside from the obvious extremes he went to make this movie, his performance was outstanding and felt genuine.
Hardy also played perhaps the best villain of the year, I think he is the most deserving of the Best Supporting Actor title out of those nominated. Of course, an argument can be made for Oscar Isaac as having played the best villain as well as the Best Supporting, and I would probably be split on whether Isaac or Hardy had a better outting. Unfortunately Isaac was completely snubbed.
The cinematography for The Revenant was incredible and I was legitimately blown away at how the audience was placed into that world visually. The pacing was great, so I also think Best Directing goes to Iniratu(sp?).

The women have an incredible weak year for nominees, I really don't even care to think about who's most deserving. Maybe write-in the hot asian chick from Ex Machina. Hell, I thought both those chicks from that movie had a better performance than most of the female noms.

Fury Road was amazing in the technical department, I expect many of the editing awards to go their way. I thought it had the best overall "look," the world they created and stunt-work was like nothing I've ever seen, and was my second favorite movie of the year. I would even say Miller should lock up Best Director, but the camera work and pacing in The Revenant is too impressive to overcome, by just a hair.

Ex Machina should win best original screenplay. I'm surprised Hateful 8 didn't get at least a nod, I know it's controversial but I think it was certainly one of the best screenplays to come out the year.

all of this. Sicario should win Cinematography and Sound Editing at least.

I haven't been sucked into a movie like that in a long time.

Were there even any leading black actor/actress roles this year of note

Didn't see it, but heard good things about michael b jordan in Creed. The guy from the martian was serviceable but his nom would just be pandering really

You can also say Leo didn't have to act cold, tired, and hungry because he actually was cold, tired, and hungry.

then why didn't he win for The Aviator and Blood Diamond?

Two nominations for Ex Maxhina. The academy is a frickin joke. Alicia Vikander doesn't get nominated despite giving the best performance of 2015, but Jennifer Lawrence gets nominated for another mediocre performance in another mediocre David O Russell fluff flick. Garland should've gotten a director nod as well. Should win best screenplay though.

Glad to see Mad Max getting so much love, at least.

Either way, the oscars are a joke. Bunch of self-indulgent, self-congratulatory loons

not really. They are way more different then they are similar.

Saying its a retelling of the same story is like saying all love stories are the same because it involves two people.

If Mad Max wins POY I'll literally never give a shite about the Oscar's again.

It was a good movie, but in no way is close to Picture of the year when put up against those it's against.

My biggest beefs:

Del Toro and Idris Elba not getting nominated for best supporting actor.

Villeneuve deserved Best Director or Sicario up for best picture.

couldn't agree more, the circlejerk around that movie is amazing. It was really well done and entertaining but it is a glorified dredd. I may have liked it a lot more if I had seen it in theaters instead of at home.

Am I the only one that thinks Ex Machina not getting a BP nod is crap?

EDIT: Also, I want to see John Williams win for Star Wars. Let's be honest, he's probably not going to be around much longer, and I really enjoyed the work. Would be great to see him up there one more time.

It's the best action movie in the last decade. I loved it. It doesn't deserve best picture but it belongs up there with all of the others mentioned. Especially the Revenant. But I respect your opinion.

Leo pulled off his incredible role in actual freezing weather, water, etc. That's ridiculously hard to do.

Id say it's alot harder to act freezing and miserable on a movie set than it is to be freezing and miserable in the arctic

This is not DiCaprio's best acting performance by any means. Mainly a lot of grunting and gritting of teeth, an acting feat that anyone off the street could pull off. But he'll probably win, and he probably deserves to win. It's a weak Best Actor field this year. If anything, it'll be a career award - he deserves three Oscars by now, for each of his three best acting jobs (What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator, The Departed).

ETA: I'm probably late to this discussion. ETA: Yep.

Jesus dude. Did you even see those two movies.

Thats like saying Inside Out is a retelling of the Rick and Morty episode Anatomy Park.

I feel this way every year. The Best Actor performances are always big movies that everyone has heard of and the Best Actress movies are usually 1 or 2 that I've heard of and the rest are movies I don't hear about until award season.
