Good lord. This is one of those shows that you only get once every 5-7 years. If you're like me and have been on the fence about "adding anotherrrrrr subscription," just take the plunge, get Apple TV, and watch this.

One of those works of art that has you wishing you came up with it. Even when I was familiar with the basic synopsis a year ago, I never fathomed the implications of the concept or the depths to which it could be explored.

Stellar.

I just finished it. I thought the first fourish episodes were pretty boring, but the mystery kept me going. I was asking people if it gets better and they said just stick with it. Somewhere in the fourth episode it took off for me and I binged the first two seasons in a few days after that.

So much of the show is an 11/10. I really like it. Season 1 as a whole is really compelling.

The story development in Season 2 hits a wall and trips and falls but eventually gets back up to season 1 level. They have a fine line to thread between holding back and giving reveals. I felt annoyed at times, just going in circles. The writers seem pretty scared to screw it up. So I get them playing it very slow, but it does make it exhausting to watch at times

The Show works best because of the chemistry and strength between the 4 workers working together. When they split them up it gets much weaker as a whole.

Do yall think they're making it up as they go? Or do they have a master plan with the major story beats for future seasons mapped out?
Ben Stiller and Dan Erickson have discussed this a lot. They have a story mapped out and an ending definitely planned, but have stated they have room for other ideas depending on the amount of seasons. That doesn't mean filler, like some may infer, but additional fleshing out of the story if time allows and aren't required to rush to the finish line.

Additionally, the attention to detail is amazing. Dan actually wrote 50 pages of Ricken's book, not just the hilarious one-liner takes. This isn't some fly by night operation.

Also, the mention of Westworld is interesting. The creators of Westworld admitted at one point they were intentionally trying to confuse their audience, just for the sake of confusion. Ben and Dan have stated they have no intention of doing that and when they see a fan theory is right, they don't change the story just to disprove that theory and mess with the audience. That makes me more confident that is going to continue to be great.

Severance: "I didn't quite follow that, I'm going to go read about fan/recap ideas to see if I can wrap my head around it."

Westworld: "I didn't follow that, and I'm not going to bother to try and figure it out"

Westworld had a stellar first season and then turned into absolute shite afterwards.

The hate season 2 gets is just ridiculous. Yes, they made it too confusing, but it wasn't like it couldn't be figured out. Just like I read episode recaps for Severance, I did the same for Westworld. I mean I did it for S1 of Westworld, doing it for S2 wasn't a big deal.

There were some legit all time great episodes in S2 that unfortunately get overlooked because of the backlash the season got. The Riddle of the Sphinx, Akane no Mai (Shogunworld episode), and Kiksuya (Indianworld episode) were really incredible TV and were as good as any episode of S1.

They intentionally tried to make it as confusing as possible just for the sake of confusing the audience - not for sake of the story. That's a big FU to fans and deserves hate. Yes, it can be figured out and there are really good episodes, but doesn't excuse their intent.

Severance on the other hand understands fans are going to figure out or guess correctly where some of the story is going and continues with the intended story.

I don't think they tried to make it as confusing as possible. Confusing, sure. But confusing as possible would basically be a show that you cannot figure out. Nolan talked after S1 was finished specifically about Reddit figuring things out and it didn't really bother him because he loved that people dove that deep into it.

I was as big of a fan of Westworld as there was. But just like reddit figured certain things out and it took off, they caused a massive hate for S2 because they didn't figure it out early. Just because it was more complex than S1, I didn't take that as an FU. The story made sense, event the article posted hating on the show admitted that.

Most people missed their intent. As a viewer we want a multi season show to have a grand arc. But with how S1 ended, they basically had to reboot and the grand arc started with S2. The problem with that is 1) People didn't know that and 2) people don't like that.

I'm not comparing the showrunners outlook on it I'm just saying that I don't mind reading up to understand something and that even though it for sure wasn't as good as S1 and had some lows, it also had a few really good highs.

But also, I'm to the point where I don't really care what showrunners say. Every show runners says they have a plan I'll believe it when I see it.

Severance respects the intelligence of its audience. Westworld S2+ said "frick you, we're not going to give you a chance to piece it together." I bailed on Westworld. I'm hooked on Severance.

Again, that's not even why I compared the two.

I disagree. Once the season was over, it made sense.

You honestly missed out on some pretty decent sci-fi TV. Also S3&4 were visually the most stunning sci-fi TV to this day.

I do think season 2 was boring as heck sometimes. First 2 episodes were fire and the last one was - but a lot of stuff is just too dang slow. We see someone running through hallways for 5 minutes, a whole episode based on someone getting their old sketchbook that should have taken 10 minutes tops instead takes an hour.

Apple TV is currently 2.99 for 3 months so I splurged to watch this, at your recommendation.

Incredible show. 3 episodes in. Been a while since I’ve had this much intrigue in a story.
