I continue to ask: how can anyone, anywhere from any walk of life take to watch anime?

Some anime series are pretty amazing and can tackle a lot of stuff without the restrictions that comes with producing live content.

Pantheon is a good example.

Yeah, it's terrible. Manga too. Anything in this vein is simply awful.

I'm not some expert since I haven't watched a ton, but from what I understand, it's like every other type of movie or series. 90% of it is shite, 10% of it is good

Ghost in the Shell is one of the best movies ever made.

AOT and Berserk are 2 of the best series' I've ever watched

It's no worse than watching marvel movies or goofy shite like star wars lol

Do you just not enjoy/appreciate art?

There's some pretty amazing work out there

I'll admit, my annoyance with anime isn't that I don't think it can be quality.

It's more that it apparently came to prominence during my youth/teen years, but despite being a very mainstream kid I knew nothing of it. So I feel like I'm getting Mandela-d when nerdy stuff like anime and obscure comics are treated like they were super popular with the average person in the 90s-00s.

I either love or hate anime. There is little in between for me. Maybe Akira I’m in between on, and I appreciate Akira, but it’s just so damn weird.

I mean, those are OK. The bottom 2 aren't really what I have in mind when making my criticism. And I'm not talking about just looking at drawings. I'm talking about the dumb shows.

I'm talking about stuff like Pokemon, Speed Racer and Dragonball Z. Is there where we do the Radiohead/Creep thing and say that stuff doesn't count as canon?

The reality is that the people who grow up to be "influencers", "taste-makers", and "critics" usually weren't the mainstream popular kids in high school. It's the weird artsy or alternative kids who grow up to be the pop culture historians who retroactively define what was cool to the next generation 20 years later.

Anime (outside of sorta Dragon Ball Z) wasn't cool with the jocks or the preppy kids. Those people are now doctors, lawyers, blue collar workers, teachers, small business owners, etc. It was popular with the weird theater kids, the band geeks, the burnouts, and the artsy kids. Those are the people who grow up to be bloggers, journalists, and youtubers.

With that said, anime is VERY mainstream NOW. Gen alpha and younger gen z consume anime a LOT more than they do any western style cartoons growing up. Where you might have watched saturday morning cartoons with the ninja turtles and GI Joe, or were watching looney tunes and Tom & Jerry, they were watching One Piece, Attack on Titan, and Naruto. Dragon Ball Z has a whole subculture among athletes as well as being extremely popular in the black and hispanic communities. It used to be a fringe thing that only nerds liked, but it's not anymore. Tunami on Cartoon Network and the Fox Saturday Morning cartoons like Pokemon and Yugioh introduced anime to mass audiences, and once streaming took over, the children of the people who played pokemon on the gameboy color are streaming Solo Leveling on Crunchyroll.

Some are good, just inoffensive action/comedy spectacles. Nothing oscar worthy, but consistently entertaining. They've missed far more often than they've hit over the last 6 years, though. Not every movie needs to be "Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy" or "No Country for Old Men". Sometimes you just want to turn your brain off and watch pretty quippy people fight a CGI sky beam for 90 minutes.

What I enjoy about anime is that it's a different formula from most western entertainment. Anime is formulaic, and can get predictable once you've watched it enough. There's a lot of weird stuff that can be legit off-putting for people who aren't used to it in much the same way metal music is. With that said, I like how they're not bound by Western conventions of storytelling or the physical constraints of live action. Their pacing is different, dialogue is different, they don't have the same sorts of "woke" characters shoehorned into everything, yet still manage to have strong and interesting women and minority characters that fit the story and world they're building.

Because anime is such a broad category, it encompasses an endless amount of different kinds of shows. There's literal porn, childish power fantasies, dumb harem rom coms, and nonsense kids shows, but there's also a lot of really interesting science fiction, slow burn romance series, social commentary, fantasy, psychological thrillers, and action series.

There are some series which I would recommend to even the most jaded of anime haters which they are likely to find some enjoyment of, as well as some series which I enjoy but I know that they would be considered complete dumb dorky nonsense to someone who doesn't have an acquired taste for it.

I believe Frieren (fantasy), Vinland Saga (historical fiction), and Spy x Family (espionage/family comedy) are three very recent series that would be great introductions to anime for adults who have watched any anime before.

A lot of the 80s cartoons were drawn by Japanese animation studios so if you grew up then you would already by accustomed to that style. Shows like Voltron and Thundercats aren't that far off from anime.

Literally all of the classic 80's action cartoons were drawn in Japan: GI Joe, Transformers, TMNT, Thundercats, Silverhawks, etc.
