I’ve been exposed to a LOT more Japanese culture ( and food ) than Bourdain. And Vietnamese for that matter. He has me on everything else by 1000 miles. I think guys like Bourdain are a reminder to slow down and appreciate where you are. Travelers tend to be super- curious people. When you travel, you meet this same guys, these expat guys, all having a similar POV. The biggest sin imho, is not to be curious. He was certainly that.

Only in the sense it leads to greater disconnection and isolation...our modern society can be a difficult place for a social, tribe evolved creature.

I’ll echo a previous poster in saying I haven’t had a celebrity suicide affect me like this since Williams.
He did more to ignite in me a love of food and travel than anyone else. The fact that I detested his politics had no bearing on how much I enjoyed seeing through his eyes places I would likely never see in my lifetime.
If there is anything after death, I hope he finds more peace than he had in life.

The only counterpoint I would make is that I would limit it to the people that watched. If you never watched, no impact. If you did, I would be shocked if you didn’t have lots of “I did that” or “I’ve gotta do that”.

it's creating a society of narcissists. not even using hyperbole
stimulants have been shown to "re-wire" the brain and i will bet that before you and i die, we find out that social media does the same
i don't know if social media necessarily creates the personality disorders at issue or just finds the dormant pathology in people and amplifies it (in people who otherwise wouldn't display the pathologies), but it's doing that on a generational level

Agreed. That’s why you’re seeing so many otherwise normal people getting whipped up into a political frenzy over Trump. They feed off of one another’s hate, amplifying it, and it’s far from healthy.

Oh frick you. I feel for famous people on Twitter because people are constantly threatening to kill or rape them or abduct their children.
You feel for famous people... on Twitter?? Are you serious? Ummmmmmm you know how to stop people from trolling you on Twitter??? GTFO Twitter. That’s how.
I understand depression. I feel for the teenager who knows nothing but school and little about the outside world and kills them self because of continuous torment.
I feel for the helpless and friendless soul who kills themself because they think no one cares.
I feel for the person who has had a bad stretch in life who feels their mistakes have hurt others and their guilt pushes them to kill themselves
A sanctimonious prick who is worth tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of dollars, lives in luxury, is paid well to be seen, goes out of their way to use his “status” to call other people out for political beliefs, has called other people out on their ability in their field? Bye Felicia.

What is TDS and what is the significance of June 11-14 being referred to as suicide weekend?

I don't think it is. I don't think the average American had any clue about the differences in Asian culture before Bordain showed up. Name one person in modern America who enlightened Americans more about the world at large than Anthony Bordain. Don't even bother with any politician, because I can tell you they simply bottom feed to the lowest common denominator and know that the average person couldn't point to South Korea on a map. Seriously name one person who had more impact on how people understood the world at large.
Holy crap you live in a bubble!
Bourdain is just a gnat on the arse of societal integration. He was on the Travel Channel for God's sake. He only moved to CNN in '13, and attracted 300K viewers, that translates to 1 in 100,000!
So, just like Bourdain should have learned, life doesn't resolve around you and what you feel about things. Coming to grips with that might help you with your depression. Something AB should have come to grips with before now

Before I moved to Japan , I was with my gf ( now Mrs Pimp) and an RN . When I told her I was moving to a small village in Oita prefecture she looked at my Vietnamese gf and said “ now do Vietnamese people and Japanese people speak the same language ?”. Swear to God- true story.
Guys like Bourdain are the antidote to that kind of mind- numbing incuriosity. And like you say, when his enthusiasm for something sparks the curiosity of others and causes them to learn about other cultures and cuisine, then he has done a great job and accomplished much.

He partook in a lot more than just the cuisine in his Asia expeditions, stayed drunk almost 24/7, and did his pre-fame wife and family terrible. He lived a deeply immoral, hedonistic, selfish, and self-destructive life. He and people like him adopt an atheistic liberal anti-trump outlook in order to bear their evil consciences and convince themselves and others they are “good”. While intelligent and very eloquent in describing food, Bourdain is not someone anyone should idolize.

I did
but I also think many people believe the first part, so that comment wasn't solely meant to argue your point

Tried to watch his show once but he came off as a complete jerk so turned it off and never watched again. I prefer to watch the River Monsters guy any day of the week.
