Yep. If you have the extraordinary every day, there is no longer an extraordinary.

Becoming attached to our desires is the road to misery. Gratitude and Humility are the keys to finding MEANING. Happiness is fleeting, people die, get sick, everything returns to dust. You have to find MEANING in where you are NOW. Chasing something out of your reach your whole life is just emptiness.

Tried. Didn’t work. Then I put my hand on my head like a make believe shark fin. Then BAM! There it was. Pulled it away and it disappeared again.
That was some David Copperfield stuff there. Thanks for the trick!

Oh but you DO have the extraordinary every day. That we feel that it’s not extraordinary is on us.

Salmon, just kill me if I ever becomes so committed to glorification of another male so much that I view a dude's suicide as some personal win

100% of suicidal people have mental health issues. Depression/suicidal tendencies is an illness. It's not that he was just sad one day and off'd himself.

I simply meant that if you have steak every day, steak will cease to be special. Everything can't be special and every day can't be extraordinary, otherwise, it too would seem normal and lose its extraordinary sense.

People can’t tell the difference between the sacred and profane these days. This elevated politicization of all things is committed to denying the humanity of others, even in death. That said, it’s important IMHO to speak truthfully about people in death, with a nod to the need for compassion.

Yep. My layman's guess is that people with fame/money tend to run out of things to chase earlier than normal people with depression and mental illness might.
While both are ultimately unfulfilling, one gets to that harsh reality more quickly and more often.

I agree. I think Bourdain had a lot of flaws and himself contributed to some of the breakdown. But he was also talented and likely gave a lot of people hope and joy and a sense of wanderlust.
There are a handful of people walking around who might make the world a better place should they exit the scene. Bourdain isn't exactly one of them, IMO.

Very Cardian, Speaker for the Dead-esque.

Social media, man.
Social pressure to behave decently around other people has diminished and people's anti social tendencies are coming out. It's because they're rewarded with attention for the idiotic, while decency is mocked.
Respect is a bastardized word.

Nothing quite says “I’m a fricking moron” like going after someone’s team when it has no relevance to the conversation.

You rember being eight and laying on the grass looking at the sky and putting a blade of grass in your mouth , and that smell of the dust in the air , and maybe thinking about the natural world ? My point is that you can chase any fantastic desire or gratification but those little moments of TRUTH are just as significant and probably more . Modern man insulates himself from being “ close to the earth”, he builds artificial layers and chases things that numb the natural pain of life . But the meaningful stuff is usually the simple stuff.

well it isn't exactly a political topic

Eh, whatever. Board policing around here seems to be just rather goofy to me at times. I was just wondering where the hell it went and had to search to find it here. Seemed a good discussion and no reason to muddle with it.
C'est la vie.

Bad move to move it. Particularly because the Poli Board has batted Bourdain topics around for a decade. And because it was on the Poli Board peoplenon the Movie Board are going to be wondering why all the comments were political.
Move the thread back to the Poli Board where it belongs. It’s a great Poli Board thread.
