How many roles has he played where he you can’t understand his character?
Look no farther than when he played twin brothers Reggie and Ronnie Kray in "Legend", the movie about the Kray brothers of England's gangster scene.
At times I was tempted to turn on the "CC" feature to see what the hell he was actually saying.

Since we aren't getting clarification on what you mean by "Our Time" I'm going to use my own definition by those actors that are are still making movies...
Christian Bale is a fine actor...just not the GOAT. He's up there.
I'm not going to pick a GOAT, but here are just a few names that come to mind that could have a legit claim to being considered among the best.
Samuel L. Jackson
Harrison Ford
Denzel Washington
Gary Oldman
Hugh Jackman
Michael Fassbender
Tom Hanks
Robert Downey Jr.
Daniel Day Lewis
I don't like the politics of some but as far as their acting craft it's hard to debate.

Some combination of Denzel, gary oldman, and DDL is the correct answer.

He typically isn't even (at least not clearly) the best actor in his own movies (American Psycho is a rare exception, and Jackman at least held his own with him in The Prestige).
In the Batman movies - he had Liam Neeson, Michael Caine, Heath Ledger (and at least in TDK, Ledger kicked all of Bale's arse), Tom Hardy, etc.

My list would include---in no particular order:
Tom Hanks
Gary Oldman
Sean Penn
Robert De Niro-----the younger version before he started dialing it in.
Johnny Depp
Al Pacino
For a list of actors still making films. Older actors from my youth are another list entirely.

Bale is deserving of being in the conversation, but it is DDL in my mind.
I think this is a fair criticism when talking about the best, but he's basically batting 1.000 in his roles over the last 30 years. He is always spectacular. I honestly think he's the best actor that ever lived.
1989-2012 he gave us this lineup of unreal performances:
-My Left Foot
-Eversmile New Jersey
-The Last of the Mohicans
-The Age of Innocence
-In The Name of the Father
-The Crucible
-The Boxer
-Gangs of New York
-The Ballad of Jack and Rose
-There Will Be Blood
-Nine
-Lincoln
I bolded the ones that, to me, are his masterpieces as an actor.

DDL is an amazing actor but he is in so few movies compared to say Lionardo DiCaprio or Christian Bale. It is not really fair to compare based on lack of output

Hostiles and the Prestige are two of my favorites.

Daniel Day Lewis disagrees.
Christian Bale agrees with DDL.
Both agree Bale deserves to be in the conversation; however, nobody else lives up to the absolute dominance of DDL's talents.

He's one of my favorites that's for sure. Definitely one of the greatest of our time.

lol.
He plays the same character in every movie he's ever been in

He is undeniably excellent but the answer is DDL without question.
With Gary Oldman right on his arse.

DiCaprio and Will Smith beg to differ

Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview (There Will Be Blood) is the single greatest performance of "our time."
