I am racking my brain trying to figure out why a legit actor like Jesse Plemmons would sign on to this garbage

You're trying to think why he would sign up to a film done by Alex Garland and A24?

It just doesn't make any sense. Actors definitely want to work with Alex Garland and A24.

Plus his wife was also cast in it and she has had a hard time getting roles, so that may have been a factor.

I am going to wait to see what others on this board say before watching it someday. I can't help but feel it will be political no matter what critics say.

How can a movie about a Civil War, an inherently political topic, not be political

Seems impossible.

How could any American civil war be fought with Texas and Cali fighting together? I would think they have their ICBMs aimed at each other.

If the south doesn't win this movie is a farce.

I think the implication is they both want to be independent, and are in an alliance of convenience with a common goal, each to obtain their own independence.

Hollywood writers only see politics when it's on the conservative side of the spectrum.

The heroes of this movie are "journalists".

It may be less political than one might expect, but I would be shocked if it isn't political and highly one-sided, as most hollywood productions are.

are they? or are they just vehicles to tell a story and get different perspectives for the war?

When asked about when he wrote the film, Garland said, “It was four years ago. I wrote it back then and sent it to A24 and they just said, ‘Yup, all good,” which was surprising.

Gee I wonder what happened 4 years ago that gave Alex this wonderful idea for a civil war movie…….

“The film is intended to be a conversation. It is not asserting things. You want to leave space for people to bring themselves to the conversation. It’s important that it was a two way street.”

It’s a movie about a civil war in the United States. Add to the fact that Hollywood has gone from political subtext in movies to flat out hitting you over the head with ideology, what do you expect, exactly? You expected this movie to not be political?

Yall are nutjobs. I've talked to several normal people who saw focus/advance screenings of this and they all thought it was fantastic, even with incomplete SFX. Everyone was surprised it wasn't MORE political. It's just a setting/backdrop

If you think Alex Garland would make an on-the-nose liberal propaganda piece, then you don't know much about his work

I expect this movie to be far less political than y'all are wish casting and that some of y'all will view this movie for the sole intent of finding any political slight

Yep. From everything I've read, it's not at all what most are expecting. It's more cerebral and is heavy on vignettes and setpieces

+1 I've seen other critics already tweeting that the trailers are very misleading

They are. They know what they're doing with the marketing.

I'm not saying it's gonna be some great movie, but Garland is one of my favorite writers/directors and I'm supremely confident that it won't be remotely as simple as many are making it out to be. It's not some Michael Bay conservatives vs liberals movie, I promise you

Look at this comment from reddit

quote:

Saw it yesterday at sxsw. Wasn’t exactly what I expected and I was a bit disappointed. It just bounces from war set piece to piece with no real explanation of what’s going on or why. Journalism is the focus of the movie

Everyone is so fricking up in arms about Texas/Cali joining forces and saying "The movie is a failure if that happens, it's just not realistic!!" It's an interesting bit of exposition and lets you ponder wtf could've happened for that, like come tf on
