I'm sure nostalgia has a little to do with it, but I remember most people my age liking it when it came out. And it was pretty hot/sexy movie for having no nudity at all. I've never even seen Dangerous Liaisons. 
It's been a while since I've seen it, but I've seen parts of it within the last ten years or so and to me it still holds up relatively well. I imagine watching it now for the first time it likely comes off a little cheesy though.

As a highschooler when this came out, it was an awesome movie aimed at people my age. We didn't give a shite about the plot it was just hot chicks and a rich dude with a badass house.
Today it holds up fairly well for some great 90's nostalgia. The ending scene with Bittersweet Symphony is great.
Not Another Teen Movie did a great job with the SMG character- "When is someone going to take a dump on MY chest?"

The difference is Wild Things never pretending to be a great movie. It was a T&A movie...with actual T&A. Particularly that of Denise Richards...who was MUCH hotter than anyone in Cruel Intentions.
I was in HS when Cruel Intentions came out. I remember watching it and thinking "God, this is boring. It's just a bunch of whiny, self-centered, morons...and no one gets naked!" If I want to see a good movie I'll watch something else. If I want to see nudity, I'll just watch porn with actual nudity. Cruel Intentions was like the worst of both worlds. Bad movie and no nudity.

Also, I don't think anyone ever really talks about wild things? The only time I've EVER heard anyone reference wild things it's been "that movie where denise richards gets naked". I feel like people reference cruel intentions as one of those classic 90s teen movies that stands the test of time.

Cruel Intentions and Wild Things are both great. And for different reasons. Obviously WT has a bit of an advantage for the nudity but CI is good in its own right IMO. I think it’s actually pretty good and entertaining.
I think WT is legit awesome with its twists and turns and backstabbings. It has you guessing a bit until the very end. I could do without Kevin Bacon’s dong, but at least the trade off is multiple Denise Richards scenes.
But nostalgia aside, I think they’re both actually good movies. Although I can understand watching them for the first time now (especially CI), they won’t hit as well.
