That's a different reason given for his exit than I've heard. IDK if one is more honest or diplomatic, but I was under the impression that he left due to personal physical reasons.
Now, if the REASON for those problems were indeed RTD et al, then screw them double. Eccleston needed 2 and maybe 3 seasons, at least.

Horrid.
Destroyed the entire franchise for me.

I thought the Capaldi writing was bad, but from there it went down like the writers and showrunners were purposely trying to make the worst show they possible could.
Outside of his last season, Capaldi was light years ahead of anything that followed him. I could actually watch Capaldi.
I hope Dr Who turns it around. I tried to give Whitaker a chance.

The over reliance on the magic wand even early on killed the show for me.
My wife, who was the bigger classic Who fan than me because she watched it with her dad, had the same complaint. The show relied more than she liked on the sonic screwdriver. I didn't watch classic Who, so my knowledge of how often it was used was more limited.

More than she liked? It seemed almost every episode was ending with the screwdriver. There is one episode with the doctor waiving it over his head like he was casting a Harry Potter spell.
I couldn't even get all the way through Capaldi. Eye boogers as an evil entity? Really?
