I'm watching! I wasn't too sure about it until I saw the preview show. Then I realized there would be half naked men, possibly supernatural beings, and sex scenes!

What book series is this based on again? I have HBO, but LOTR didn't interest me and this hasn't much either, but I usually enjoy HBO original programming. I'd like to read the books before I watch a series when I can.

A song of ice and fire. Game of thrones is the first book.

But frick them if they think I will get a higher teir cable package, just to get the ability to order HBO, for this one show.
Just do it. I did and I'm loving it. AMC and Showtime has just as much quality programing with Dexter, Weeds, Walking Dead, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad.
You also get other epic shows like Boardwalk Empire, Eastbound and Down, and Treme (which hopefully will be better in season 2).

Think semi-realistic medieval era world in a decidedly non Earth setting.
seasons last years and are irregular.
The phrase "Winter is Coming" is a reference to this, as a lot of the story has to do with the Stark family, which lives in the far north of the fantasy world.
There are touches of supernatural elements that get expanded upon as the series goes on, but the first book season will mostly be about the political strife going down between House Lannister and House Stark, which gets intensified greatly due to a series of events at the start of the story line.
Dont let the "political" part scare you off. There's lot of verbal maneuvering, yes, but a lot of action as well.
*very mild spoiler*
Including battles, some of the scale of LOTR's Siege of Gondor.*

I have basic cable.
AMC btw puts their shite on iTunes the next day (which I buy).
Outside of Dexter though, I have no interest in those other shows you mentioned.
I like how the counter for me not wanting upgrading my TV plan and get HBO on top of that is to spend more money getting more channels than even that
One of the reasons why I don't want it BTW is because I need unscrambled cable for my setup (which goes through a HTPC which is then relayed to a TV through an extender). I would need to go through a digital cable box to get HBO.

That was everything I had hoped it would be. Followed the book very closely.
