EXCLUSIVE: This is a bit early, but The Dish hears momentum is building on the Smokehouse-produced next installment of the Warner Bros caper film franchise that started with Ocean’s Eleven. Sources said that George Clooney and Brad Pitt are coming back, and they are courting Edward Berger to take over directing duties.

Berger is emerging as an elite filmmaker. He followed All Quiet on the Western Front (it won four Oscars including Best International Feature) with Conclave, the Focus Features drama about the intrigue behind the election of a new pope that has drawn raves after its Telluride debut, establishing the film as a Best Picture Oscar candidate with Berger and Ralph Fiennes at the center of the awards race also. The film gets its next shot with a Toronto Film Festival premiere. Fiennes stars alongside Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Isabella Rossellini and a strong supporting cast.

This time George Clooney helps steal an election.

(Sorry, the joke was too obvious not to make)

They shouldn't be allowed to make another one since Bernie Mac is dead.

Depends on who they replace him with.

I’m willing to give this a shot depending on the cast and story.

I'd be stunned if at least a couple from Ocean's 8 don't replace some of Danny's crew.

If they can get someone decent to give the same vibe it may work. I did always enjoy the movies from a purely heist entertainment aspect.

Soderberg is one of the all time greats, those are big shoes to fill and while at a surface level that seems like an easy movie to get the beats right on, his stylization of those movies is what makes them work so well and makes them so rewatchable and I think that’s a very understated part of those movies, and I think even more important when you’re dragging most of these guys back in way older and in a different time of cinema / the world.

I’ll give it a shot either way but I hope this doesn’t turn out as a lifeless Netflix release that mistakes 4K cameras and big budgets for craft and vision

I think they could honor Bernie with someone like Cedric The Entertainer or another person who would fill his role.

Agreed, but Soderberg has likely passed which is why they're courting Berger. Aside from the Ocean’s films, he also directed Logan Lucky. He's probably burned out on the heist genre.

That would be an insult not an honor. If you want to get a talented black comedian to replace him, go with DL Hughley or Katt Williams. Or George Wallace.

Cedric sucks. I know they all did the same tour “ Kings of Comedy” but Bernie was the best.

They will probably replace him with Kevin Hart.

Since half the fun of these movies is the over the top star power it would be a good move to get people like Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway involved.

They say he's dead but they never show him die. He's a con-man so it's an easy fix.
