Thief is one of my favorite if not my favorite movie of all time. Caan's performance in that movie is master work. He was one of the last, cool motherfrickers.

At the height of his popularity in the 1970s, he seemingly could have had just about any role he wanted, but he surprised Hollywood by turning down some big ones, including the leads in The French Connection, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Kramer vs. Kramer. (Each brought an Oscar to its respective star.)

He also said no to playing Hans Solo in Star Wars, Captain Willard in Apocalypse Now and a part in Superman.

Let's just say he had some issues back in the 70's and 80's (not unlike TONS of others in the business) but he eventually got his shite together and had a solid second half of his career.

RIP and so many great movies and roles.

One of the things I liked about JC was he defended his turning down KvK, calling it "bourgeois crap" -- an opinion I heartily kige.

as did Burt Reynolds

Captain Willard in Apocalypse Now
as did every major leading man in H'wood. Nobody wanted to spend six months in the Philippines jungle. The shoot would end up giving Sheen a heart attack

and a part in Superman
The title role, which led to the classic exchange:
MARLON BRANDO: C'mon Jimmy, do the picture. We'll have a lot of fun!
JAMES CAAN: You don't have to wear the suit.

Jimmy Caan's coolest moment ever: as the villain in the 1969 Get Smart episode "To Sire, With Love" (a Prisoner of Zenda spoof). His billing was "Rupert of Rathskeller as Himself" - Caan appeared on condition his name not be used.

One of the most underrated films of the last 50 years.

It feels so what tame now, but audiences in 1981 had never really seen proper gunplay, reloading, and real tactical room clearing in a movie before.

Imagining Caan or Reynolds as Solo makes me chuckle. Imagining either sharing a scene with Alec Guinness would be memorable. I could just imagine the SNL spoofs with Norm McDonald playing either one.

Caan getting an attitude with Vader. At the time, he and Carrie Fischer would have been honorary Columbian citizens. Imagining Caan as Solo in Empire Strikes Back with Billy Dee Williams.
