Magnolia knocked me on my arse the first time I saw it. Basically, all those characters need a hug.
I loved it and Boogie Nights, but I feel a lot of what PTA has done lately has been dull, outside of Vice. The Master and TWBB left me cold. Never saw Phantom Thread. There’s a rumor he wants to make a musical about L.A.’s version of the Cotton Club and put Maya Rudolph and Tiffany Haddish in it, that could be interesting

Inherent Vice is PT’s best ??? That’s rich
It's my favorite of his movies. It's like The Big Lebowski and Chinatown had a '70s love child. It's one of my favorite novels and PTA did a phenomenal job adapting it to film. It's paced well, it's funny, all the characters are interesting, you have to pay attention to get the most out of it. To me, it's almost perfect.

The Master was all sound and fury signifying nothing.
Terribly disappointing.
Terribly disappointing.

Has to be the most overlooked performance of Philip Seymour Hoffman's career
Every single significant role in this film was acted jaw-droppingly well.
However, I do think American Beauty is aging better that you suggest.

Its crazy but I really only knew Philip Baker Hall as Bookman from Seinfeld before this, and he was outstanding. Instantly became one of my favorite actors and a very well respected name in Hollywood.
Not many actors or actresses hang on that long before really blowing up like he did after this one.

Agreed.

Cruise showed insane chops as an actor and was robbed of an Oscar (don’t even think he got a nomination)
Sadly this is one of the last times he tried to really act and take a risk on a role

The last scene with cruise and his father is one of the best movie scenes of all time
With absolute certainty, and that scene does not hold up if not for the brilliant setup and buildup to it throughout the movie. This is by far PTA's finest film, and it's a classic. I know people hate it due to the raining frogs, which I get, but for me that was a great metaphor as well as tie in for the overall theme.
Great great film

IMO, that movie sucked balls.
a bit harsh. it was a good movie with an all-time great performance. DDL is the best actor of the last 3 decades, and he brought it with this one. Really he is the reason this movie does not suck balls. Without him, I would agree with you

I agree Cruise was outstanding and I would have voted for him to win.
But 99 was another LOADED category there. Any of them would have been deserving imo.
Michael Caine - Cider House Rules
Tom Cruise - Magnolia
Michael Clarke Duncan - The Green Mile
Jude Law - The Talented Mr Ripley
Haley Joel Osment - The Sixth Sense
I actually thought Caine’s performance was the least memorable although still very good and the best part of that movie imo, but his acceptance speech was so humble that it was absolutely show stopping and probably my favorite and most memorable acceptance speech of all time.
Michael Caine GOAT acceptance speech

I mean that would be a weird reason to like the movie so I don’t see the correlation
I mostly wanted to like it because I loved boogie nights.
But, magnolia is one of many movies in which the setting of the San Fernando valley plays a key role. I’ve seen and enjoyed most of those movies; Magnolia is one of the lone exceptions.

I really is, may be my favorite movie of all time, up there no doubt.

Saw it when it first came out and really liked it. Watched it again 10 years later and LOVED it.
3 themes/things that stuck with me:
1. There is a correlation between intelligence and loneliness. Macy and Cruise both play characters reflecting this in different ways.
2. "The one least likely..." There's a lot of this going on... where the one least likely to be there for someone is the one that is actually there. Makes the last 3 seconds of the film especially powerful. Claudia does something that she hadn't up until that point in the movie.
3. The frogs reminded me of Katrina upon 2nd viewing except my neck of the woods was the microcosm. No matter who you were... what you background or situation at that time.... The one thing that everybody had in common was the weather. The INSANE fricking weather. Great leveler of a playing field.

I watched this movie for the first time twenty five years after it was made. And what a movie. It was a "on top of their game" ensemble cast. I understand the criticism of the singing and the frogs. The frogs were a slap in the face. But both the frogs and the singing came at a pivotal point in the lives of these screwed up characters. And I was mesmerized by the performance of Melora Walters as the cocaine addicted strung out Claudia. I mean what a flawless performance. I can't even get my head around how she pulled that character off.

Licorice Pizza was pretty cool. Haven't seen Magnolia since it came out, but Boogie Nights is classic, mostly cause it helped me get laid one night ;)
Edit to add
Damn this is his next movie coming out next year
The Battle of Baktan Cross is an upcoming American film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, Sean Penn, Alana Haim, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, and Benicio del Toro

Excellent movie plus you set to see a lot of Marisa Tomei.

Sidney Lumet knew Philip Seymour Hoffman was going to have more difficulty with the opening sex scene than Marisa Tomei. "I don't think Philip has ever conceived of himself in the nude fricking onscreen. It's just not something that comes his way. So when we started blocking, Marisa hopped up on the bed, got on her hands and knees, slapped her arse and said, 'Come on Philly, let's go!' I could kiss her. Because if Philip had any inhibitions, they were gone," Lumet said
