The scene with Holden realizing that he is in mortal danger as Ed Kemper towers over him in that hospital room is one of the most terrifying TV moments ever. They did it so well, his post-trauma shock seems entirely justified.

Somehow I missed this one, like a lot in the 00-04 time frame when life was crazier.
Going to start watching this week.

That's what they report, but I still have trouble actually believing it.
Unless we're talking exorbitant cast or development costs, how expensive could a period-procedural like this possibly be? This from a network that happily brought us the abysmal The Get Down and Marco Polo that each clocked in somewhere around $10m per episode.
it was reported at 8mil per episode.
Fincher is pretty notoriously precise. There is a good bit of CGI to make it look accurate to the time.
the show looks and feels like a movie. Recently rewatched, it kinda insane how many sets, locations and extras the show uses compared to any other bit of TV.
beyond that, i just don't studio heads like risking a ton of money for something as grim as mindhunter despite Fincher regularly proving that people want to watch his stuff

Oh dang, my theory may be wrong then.

3rd season
I checked twice a year to see if they were going to do it but it seems like it is not going to happen.
Great series.

I love Mindhunter and highly suggest picking up the book, obviously the book focuses on the cases instead of the outside life Netflix pushed in for the show.
There have been many excuses for season 3. Basically cost, Fincher having a lot on his plate, actors deciding they can’t wait any longer and taking other roles, and it wasn’t the most popular show at the time so is probably more of a headache to try and bring back than anything else.
Maybe one day it’ll come back, doesn’t seem like Netflix is pushing “content” as much as they were back then. If they would go back to focusing on writing and nailing a handful of shows a year, it could definitely make a return.

Yes. This is a fictionalized telling of some of the earlier days of that group and how they evolved. If you like the serial killer genre then this is a GOAT type show even at only 2 seasons.
Mindhunters has 3 main FBI characters. The older guy is based off of one of the original creators of the group. The younger guy is based off John Douglas who became probably the most famous profiler out of the group. Silence of the Lambs based the Scott Glenn character on him. Both have written books with Douglas writing a lot of them. Most are good reads.
The older guy is more old school and bare bones while the younger guy is a bit more arrogant...both traits true in real life. I haven't read anything specific, but I always thought they maybe didn't really like each other in real life. They definitely worked closely together like shown on the show with the older guy being sort of a mentor. But when you read their books they seem to only mention the other in passing for the most part. You would think after being that close there would be more praise of their partner. It could also be that in reality they both worked with a much bigger group than portrayed on the show and that's just how it goes.
The female is based on a real person but I believe is more of a combination of multiple real people. From what I've read it seems like the FBI/serial killer parts of the show are grounded in reality while the personal lives of the group are mostly fiction. I read the real life lady's son got a kick out of them making her a lesbian on the show.

If I remember the book correctly, I think Holden's relationship was real but obviously highly dramatized. It would've been better to try and not focus on their outside lives but I get why they did it. Some of it was just a bit too eye-rolling for me.

Would love it if somehow HBO could do season 3.

Groff is currently starring in Just in Time on Broadway. It's a bio-jukebox musical about Bobby Darin. I hope to take my mom to see it this fall.
Other fun fact...he is also Kristoff and Sven in the original Frozen movie.
Groff is busy with Broadway, his first love. He is not coming back to be Holden.

Groff was also the best part of Hamilton.

Did this thread miss that Fincher said he wants to do a movie to wrap it up?

I think we’ll all believe it when we see it. There have been so many teases about reviving this thing, and they never come to fruition.

I've said this and I can't say it enough. For those of you who really loved this show, download the audiobook "The Killer Across the Table" by John Douglas.
It's the best and closest thing we will ever get to a 3rd season of Mindhunters.
It's even narrated by Jonathan Groff, aka Holden Ford.
Douglas confirms a lot of shite that happened in the show. Talking about how Richard Speck threw a bird right into the fan in real life for one example.

I heard an interview with Holt McCallany aka Bill Tench and he said Fincher was so damn detailed, OCD. The cookout scene in season 2 at Tench's house, which was maybe 5-10 mins long, they shot that 32 times.
That right there is a lot of the reason why we may never see a 3rd season. Fincher just wears people out, apparently.
