I agree with OP on most points. Music was not stand out, and the story was lackluster. A generally forgettable movie that would have been straight to DVD a long time ago. And I say this knowing that Moana is one of my favorite Disney movies

My youngest daughter liked it
Was a fun time to see it over thanksgiving
Seems like they used this as a vehicle for Moana 3 given island Thanos in the mid credits scene

It was supposed to be direct to Disney+ TV series, but Iger had them rewrite it to a movie and changed it to a theater release.

Soundtrack was completely forgettable. Don’t have a single song I remember the day after
Also, they introduced so many new characters and did pretty much nothing with them
Honestly was a bad movie and would be a complete bust if it didn’t have tie to an already successful franchise

Interesting, it would have been better built out longer into a limited TV series

Yes the tv series makes since because they gave us all these new characters and did jack shite with them

Why are you looking at a teenager's lips?
j/k. But how old is she supposed to be? That's the thing with Disney, making their female characters of nondescript ages between 13-17ish..
And it's not a new phenomenon. 'Alice' was originally supposed to be about 7-8 yrs old.

It felt a little rushed to me, but it was enjoyable. Little sis pulled those heart strings
I assume that w/it originally being a TV series having to cobble together 30-45 minute episodes into a full movie was probably a massive pain in the arse.

Just got out of it I thought it was underwhelming. Like others said the music was ehh
Were there post credit scenes? they didnt show was happened with Matangi and i thought her singing was more motown than polynesian
moni found a drawing describing the island situation that “took some digging”
was there a library of drawings? And no one knew anything about it the island?

The soundtrack was enjoyable but not memorable like every song in the original. Maui's solo piece was absolutely forgettable.
It sounded like someone who isn't Lin Manuel Miranda tried to write Lin Manuel Miranda songs.

I was totally wrong on the box office foe this. Here are the records Moana 2 has broken so far. domestic 3-day of $135.5M, 5-day of $221M, international of $165.3M and worldwide haul of $386.3M. The original Moana ended its domestic run at $248.7M and $643.3M
Domestic:
Highest 5-day opening of all-time (surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie at $204.6M).
Highest Thanksgiving weekend of all time by far (surpassing Frozen 2’s holdover take of $125M 5-day and $94M 3-day).
Highest Thanksgiving debut by far (more than doubling Frozen’s $94M 5-day and $67M 3-day).
Best Thanksgiving Day take of $28M, nearly double the prior record of $15M (Frozen 2) .
Highest ever Black Friday at the box office with $54.5M (exceeding Frozen 2’s $34.2M)

And I have 7+ comments from dudes in another thread when I was just objectively witnessing what actually happens on this board.
Good on you though, for real.

I wish they incorporated the coconut companion more, as he was easily my favorite character this time around. Not as good as the first, but it’s serviceable.

Was just a fair movie to me. It had no pizzazz, just went thru the emotions.

Me and the youngest were saying they could do a spin-off with the coconuts like they did with the Minions.

Once the numbers come out the culture warriors duck and hide.
They'll find the next movie to claim is gonna fail because woke or whatever reason

First impressions -
Kids enjoyed it.
Music is nowhere near as good/catchy
New characters are largely good/funny.
Even the youngest asked as the credits started “what about the bat lady?” Glad we stayed for the mid credits scene and obviously Moana 3 has been green lit.
ETA - this one has a lot of cute/funny one liners like Moanabees for the girls in the village who desperately wanted to be just like Moana.
