Too much to try and fit in one movie.
Like others, I was excited when this first came out but when the first reviews came out I was immediately disappointed and every review since has basically been the same - so I've never taken the time to see it. But more to your point, I don't think any single movie could do Napoleon's life justice.
A proper 10-part series on HBO would be perfect.

When I start a movie, no matter how terrible it turns out to be, I typically finish it 99% of the time….congrats napoleon on being in that 1%. Just awful.

But why though?
Why would an atheist also make a film about Moses?
Because Rudley likes making movies and getting giant checks to do so.
And, as stated, he also loathes the French as most old Brits do. It was his way of pissing on Napoleon's grave.

Eh, I don’t find that persuasive at all as to why the movie is complete shite.

The Bondarchuk/Rod Steiger “Waterloo” makes this one look like amateur hour.
I was about to post the same. Great movie. Anyone disappointed by the modern take should watch this one.

I’ve read that Scott has said this is it, there won’t be a directors cut. I thought it was awful.

I should have read this thread before wasting 90 minutes last night watching it.
I made it through the point where he finally had a son with his second wife and then took the baby to Josephine...really bizarre that he would do that (I know he did it in real life).
I thought the one thing the film did well was illustrate his insecurities but otherwise it was just boring incoherent garbage. As the OP stated so eloquently, it "had no rhythm, no character development, no story structure. All it seemed to be was a conglomeration of scenes shot piecemeal and cobbled together by an amateur."
The only redeeming quality was Vanessa Kirby in those 18th century dresses. Also the sex scenes did a good job representing what us normal dudes probably look like when hitting it from behind, while we think we look like Christian Bale in American Psycho.

If tweet fails to load, click here. Normally I’d be excited for a Ridley DC, but I don’t have the motivation to sit through nearly another hour of this.
