The 97th Academy Awards drew 18.07M viewers across ABC and Hulu on Sunday night, per Disney.

Likely not the number that the Mouse House was hoping for, considering it’s a bit of a decline over the past two years. It was about a 7% decrease from last year’s four-year audience high of 19.5M viewers and was just slightly lower than the year prior, when 18.8M tuned in for the 95th annual Academy Awards in 2023.

This year’s small audience decline is pretty on par with other award shows recently, suggesting that these ceremonies might be settling into a new normal after all of them saw viewership tank in 2020. The Grammys were down 9% this year, and the Golden Globes were basically the same year-over-year.

They chose to snub one of the biggest blockbusters of the year in favor of movies no one saw and wonder why their ratings dropped…

These people are presiding over their own demise.

I love the Oscars and watched the last two years, but sat this one out bc the nominees were so bad.

This is the main reason I don’t watch. I’ve never even heard of most of the nominees. I’m also not a cinephile looking for a circle-jerk, so whatever.

Didnt watch. We have the internet to rate and review movies and tell us what was the best in each category.

Dune is gay and boring. “Oh we’re in the desert fighting over spices!” Shut up

And this is why you'll get Barbie 2.

Don't blame me. I watched for the first time in about 5 years.

But yeah, though there were good movies, it was really just another round of issue-based topics. The average person sees that and immediately loses interest. I don't expect next year will be any better after a year of TDS has done its work.

If you spent time here you'd know that Anora and The Brutalist are two really good to great films that most of us wouldn't have bothered with if they' hadn't been nominated.

shite on the award shows all that you want, but the "never heard of them" aspect is a benefit, not a detriment to the Oscars.

I seriously can't even begin to wrap my mind around someone wasting 4 hours of their weekend on watching that thing.

It was boring even when it was "good" and the movies were popular.

The only reason it was ever popular in the past was there were no other good alternatives. Now there are, which is why all those stupid aware shows are dying in terms of public interest.

Yep. There's no appeal to watching those award shows when i could just watch something steaming. I was probably watching american primeval during the oscars

Hollywood has lost its glamour. It's just not interesting to watch tone deaf industry members pat each other on the back, when not hectoring the general public to adopt their politics.

Oscars Audience Up To 19.69M After Disney Adds Mobile & PC Viewing

quote:

UPDATED: The 97th Academy Awards is up to 19.69M viewers across ABC and Hulu after accounting for mobile and PC viewing, per Disney.

That’s up quite significantly from the 18.07M viewers Disney reported on Monday, and it does boost the show slightly above last year’s four-year audience high of 19.5M viewers. PC and mobile viewing is always accounted for in Nielsen’s final reporting, though it’s not usually this large of a discrepancy.
