“Annabelle” writer Gary Dauberman is sinking his teeth into one of Stephen King‘s most famous tales with the first trailer for the upcoming “Salem’s Lot,” streaming on Max on Oct. 3

Based on King’s 1975 novel, “Salem’s Lot” follows Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman), a successful writer who moves back to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot to write his next novel, inspired by an experience he had in an abandoned house in the town. His arrival coincides with the purchase of the house by Kurt Barlow (William Sadler), an ancient vampire using his human familiar Richard Straker (Pilou Asbæk) to turn the citizens of the town. As more and more locals are transformed into vampires, Mears and his human allies are trapped in a fight for their lives.

This has been in post production hell for years and years. I hope it’s good…. But there’s a reason this has been sitting on the shelf since 2021

I never read Salem’s Lot. Would be cool if they incorporated the mutual characters in the upcoming Dark Tower series by Mike Flanagan (all the Netflix horror shows), but I don’t think that is on Max.

"I’m extremely thankful for Steve’s support," Dauberman tells Total Film in our new issue out on Thursday, September 12, which features The Penguin on the cover. When pressed to go into detail about what exactly King did to help, the director simply adds, "Let’s just say it provided some shock support for some of the more bumpy portions of this journey and leave it at that."

The upcoming flick was originally scheduled for release in September 2022 with Warner Bros. but was delayed to Spring 2023, before being shelved and pulled from a US theatrical release altogether. Now, Salem’s Lot is slated for a small screen premiere on the popular streaming service Max this spooky season before being released in UK and Ireland theaters.

The reason for its pushback has not been confirmed, and it seems like not even King knows as he recently took to Twitter to defend the movie. "I've seen the new Salem’s Lot and it's quite good," wrote King. "Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it's embarrassing, or anything."

best IN gif ever

I’m so pumped for this. Don’t know why WB held it and don’t care.

Awesome. I read a King book every October to get in the mood for spooky season. Just happened to read this one last year. It’s a slow burn but it’s awesome

That looks to be potentially bad. Salem's Lot is Steven King's best book. It is start to finish outstanding story telling and pacing, with a great ending for a change. I have read the book and watched the best made for t.v. horror movie ever (1979's David Soul version not '04's Rob Lowe version) and it looks like they have made a number of changes and added characters and scenes. And of course they race and sex swapped Dr. Cody. That Nick Offerman looking dude playing Straker is about to get his arse kicked by James Mason who was perfect in that role as was that entire cast. I hope to proven wrong though because it is the best vampire story ever.
