I'll refrain from engaging in name calling.
He hid because he wanted maximum carnage. His goal was the kill as many as possible before meeting his death. Annie did her juju on an amulet he wore at all times, and even though he voiced skepticism, he never removed it because how else does he explain to himself how he's still alive (given the type of life he lives). When he finally removes the amulet, it signals that he's ready to die and be with Annie and his dead infant.

You just disproved your point. “He wanted maximum carnage” supports my position.

Finally watched this last night and was a little disappointed. Cinematography and visuals were great but it seemed like it would’ve been a better film if they cut about 25% and stuck with one theme. It really dragged to me at the beginning and had 3 endings. Also, if you have to explain to the audience what is happening via narrative TWICE in the movie something needs to be tightened up.
If they felt like they HAD to shoehorn in the KKK (which is fine for the period) why not make them the vampires? The whole Irish River Dance thing was just weird and the second ending where he got to shoot the evil KKK guy that wasn’t even in the movie except for the very beginning was forced. The influence of the KKK on the rural south seems like a totally different story than the inclusion and blending of the different heritages and their impact on music. Also, the inclusion of the “future” music in that scene caused some LOL moments which I don’t think they intended.
Pretty mid IMO although the music was cool.

It’s like a better From Dusk Till Dawn. Really beautiful movie in a lot of ways.
Except not better.
I feel like the whole world is gaslighting me. Thought this movie was terrible. And Michael B Jordan, whom I usually like ok, was the worst actor on screen X 2.

Smoke dying and not becoming a vampire is necessary for the mid credit ending scene to work.

Not even close to its equal in any way except on a technical, visual level. You are being gaslit, this movie was an unfocused mess. I do have to disagree with you on the worst performance statement you made though, the Asian couple were by far the worst acted characters in that movie.

He does get shot because he came out of cover.
He should have stayed in the woods but he didn't want to live without his brother. That at that point we thought was dead.

I only hear good things.
And also, it was basically the same script as the Blade movie, which is now has been shelved.

As it was written but there are countless was he could’ve been mortally injured … maybe before killing the protagonist….sent his cousin off…and had his reunion vision as he died. Shoeing in a machine gun fight with a bunch of randoms wasn’t necessary.

It’s like 4 different ideas of a movie in a demolition derby.

he second was the weird musical number at the juke joint where they tried way too hard to incorporate black culture throughout history. I get what they were trying to do, it just fell way flat and felt weird and out of place to me.
Same. I was watching and stopped and thought "What the hell is going on right now?"
A couple more gripes:
1)The vampires that were made that night had zero survival instincts? They just stood there and got burned by the sun? They have a hive mind so they should have known from the original vampire that the sun would hurt them.
2) Minor gripe because it doesn't really matter but the Klan came for him at the end in the middle of the day? I'm no historian but I think the Klan would typivally hunt down and lynch people in the middle of the night with burning crosses.
3) My biggest Gripe: more than 1 vampire was inside the Juke and volunatrily ran out for one reason or another. Once inside, Why not just kill everyone? Leaving means they had to be invited back in. Just seemed like a pretty big plot hole to me.
Overall a very good movie. I am not sure I'd put it on any all time list but it was very entertaining and the visuals were great.

I wouldn't say it was terrible, but I don't really have any intention of rewatching it.

I watched it over the weekend. I in general liked it. I thought the ending with the KKK felt very tacked on and didn't work for me at all, the rest of the film was a bit better than that.
There was some really cool stuff in this movie. It certainly wasn't good enough to justify the hype it got, but it was still fine.
My wife, who is barely ever online, does not pay attention to anything but work, family and home life, had no clue what this movie was and had never heard of it.
Afterwards she said "where do you find these stupid movies"

Watched it last night - overall enjoyed it
My only real complaint was the run time; it was too long

I liked it quite a bit. I'll probably re-watch it every year or two. I don't think its some kind of cinematic masterpiece though.
Its overrated for the same reasons Get Out was, but its a much better movie than Get Out IMO

Mine too
One of the weirdest decisions in this movie was when we’re introduced with all of the oppressed groups or groups that contributed to our combined heritage we get native Americans, Chinese, blacks tied to the plantation work, the interracial couple…..and then our primary villain is an Irish guy who assimilates everyone into doing a River Dance?
My first thought was “what the hell did the Irish do to piss the writers off and why do they hate Irish music?”
If one of the underlying messages was of immigrants cultural appropriation then the Irish guy should’ve been one of the core group and the KKK should be the vampires.
If the message was the cultural origin of the blues and leaning into the “Devil’s Music” trope then why have Irish and Chinese music at all?

He is a villain but he is legitimately trying (in his own mind) to help the black people in the movie.
A big theme is about black people having the blues (or some form of it) as their music for a long time, but people are coming to stop them from playing it (the KKK) or to take it for themselves (Remmick, the Irish Vampire). But even though he is trying to 'steal' their music, he understands because the English banned Irish folk music and dance in his home country, so he feels like its justified and that he is just "preserving" it.
So the Irish in this movie are actually in a way seen as just as persecuted as blacks at one time, which they kind of were.

I saw the interview with actor afterwards and heard that message. My take is that the same message could’ve been portrayed more efficiently with a little clean up. As was said earlier…a lot of different storylines crashing together in this film.
