I’m really surprised they didn’t have all the living, original cast members on stage together at some point. No Dan Ackroyd or Chevy?
And where was Dana Carvey?

quote:The original cast earned that recognition. Without them the show wouldn't have made it to the 80s...much less the 90s, 00s, 10s and 20s.
They wasted 5 minutes with that horrible Belushi graveyard sketch

Think of all the firepower at this show: Murphy, Chase, Murray, Sandler, Chappelle, Rock, Seinfeld, Short, Ferral, and so on. We will never have a group of entertainers at one event like this again. Sad to the end of era so to speak.
Why would someone decline a milestone anniversary?

The video anxiety song and Chad the stagehand was garbage.

Also, I saw Jane Curtain onstage at the end but I don't remember her appearing on this special.

I saw Chevy on stage at the end and you could see him not too sure with his steps off the stage when things got crowded. (He's supposed to sign in Chicago in 3 weeks...I don't he shows.) Dan may have had issues getting up there. I've seen him at Hawks games with John's brother and he's not the most fleet of foot.
I thought Dana got on the stage early. It feels like they avoided the "go to" sketches (Church Lady, Target Lady, Who Up With That?) and went more towards highlighting the people in the underrated ones.
I am so happy that they made sure to feature old footage of John and Chris. Drugs robbed all of us of their generational talent. Imagine Belushi being there to save Chris from going down the same path. Farley would've been right at home in the American Pie/Farrell movie era.
In hindsight the Lorraine and Pete sketch foreshadowed them running the film near the end. I got the feel that they didn't have a shared moment with the surviving founders out of respect for John and Gilda.

quote:Maybe it's an age thing. TIL that I am older than Sabrina Carpenter's parents...talk about a reality check. I am a child of parents who conceived me at the end of Season 1. The first cast I completely remember watching weekly was that late 80s group. (The first full episode was the Jerry Hall hosted episode which was 39 years and a day ago.) I sought out old footage when it aired on cable. I thought that "2nd golden age" cast in the early-mid 90s sucked in the moment.
Chad the stagehand was garbage
I've been a Day 1 SNLer going back to VHS releases. (I wore out my Best of Eddie Murphy tape within a month.) Day One when they started releasing the first five seasons on DVD. Day 1 on SNL & Belushi books. Day 1 on Saturday Night in the theater and on Blu-Ray. BUT I won't watch it live anymore. I can get through it in less than a half hour after fast forwarding through the political shite. (The Hanks Jeopardy part unnecessarily soiled what was a fairly non-political reunion tonight.)
So yeah... Davidson didn't need to be in the walk down memory lane but he served a good purpose by keeping things as light as he could.

What the hell was Sabrina Carpenter doing right in the middle of the cast members as if she’s some SNL staple?

The vast majority of the show was a huge letdown. I thought it was going to be 3 hours of a compilation of all the best skits over the last 50 years.

Of all the songs to open with they pick an obscure deep cut from Paul Simon?
Simon sang Homeward Bound with George Harrison in 1976 on SNL
it was a pretty big moment
the song is about going Home, you know like to a reunion?

quote:I won't be surprised if Lorne calls it a career at the end of this season. It's been 50 years... he's not going to do much more to add to the show as an important piece of entertainment history (maybe even western history). As they leave the studio tonight there will never be a place with comedy legends except perhaps for Lorne's funeral.

quote:I missed the first few seconds while getting to extend the recording on my computer. Jane and Lorraine were the smokeshows in the original cast. Lorraine was a very underrated member. I've read both hopped around cast, crew, and writers beds. TIL Gilda was married to GE Smith (glad to see him play in the NY sketch) before she married Gene Wilder.
Also, I saw Jane Curtain onstage at the end but I don't remember her appearing on this special.
Finally, I forgot to mention that they deserve kudos for not letting DeNiro get anywhere close to a political sketch.

quote:They've been streaming that stuff for free over the past few months. They needed to create something new while passing homage to the past. It was similar to a regular show though and they even mentioned it. I laughed a lot building into WU. I didn't laugh all that much after that but that was mainly because I didn't like some of the old sketch/mixed era players.

The cemetery short film was done by Tom Shiller and Belushi as a joke in 1978
the irony is Belushi was the FIRST one to die, not the last one
that message is not lost on us
they clearly wanted to do a different show tonight than they did at the 40th, so they highlighted a lot of different people and call backs in the sketches
we got a sketch with murphy and ferrell together, which was a treat. Ferrell and Murphy are usually considered the top two cast members
if Eddie Murphy did a weekly sketch comedy and variety show right now just pump it straight into my veins
adam sandler’s song stirred up some dust in my living room that made my eyes water a little
the current cast get used a lot because they are there the whole time, makes it easier to set things up for when the celebs come in later in the week. the same thing happened at the 25th and 40th anniversary shows
Hader declined, Aykroyd just said he wasnt coming
not sure about Miller, Carvey, Jim Breuer, Jay Mohr, Oteri, etc
was great to see Rob Schneider sitting next to Sharpton, Mike Myers participate, Chris Kattan thanking Lorne on stage (he sued the show), GE Smith on stage (he got let go rather brutally)
I like how they really shined the light on as many as they could, in front of and behind the cameras. Keep in mind a lot of the people we saw tonight will be retired or dead by the next Anniversary, if the show continues
this was it for a lot of them.
I appreciate that I got to see Sir Paul sing the Abbey Road medley again, no matter how rough his voice is at 83. perfect way to end the show

Ariana would've been better but she might've been at the Baftas. Then again they did made fun of espresso before so tonight was the rebuke sort of with wicked. Maybe it was a joke but man she sounded pretty bad.
Totally unrelated but here's the Q and A ....I didn't catch it all the first time
Keith pops up around 5:20

I prefer to remember the first 40 years of SNL than the last ten. SNL is arguably the biggest American entertainment institution in history. Second would be The Tonight Show (with Carson).
I was surprised to see Eddie as he has generally stayed away from SNL anniversary shows. He was fantastic. Some believe he saved the show in its toddler years. I was disappointed Aykroyd wasn't there as he is my pick for GOAT cast member.
I enjoyed the show tonight. There were only a few dud skits, and yes some were overdone, but the nostalgia was worth it. The best skit was the last one with Eddie, Keenan, and Ferrill. That should have led off the night.
I don't watch SNL anymore, so tonight was a real treat.

well said, I dont disagree but I do still cherry pick modern episodes based on the hosts
we have to keep in mind they pulled off a live three hour show with two weeks to prepare and the main contributors only coming in during this week
I thought they did an outstanding job, all things considered
it was respectful, comprehensive and genuine to all of the eras of SNL
putting costner and jenna ortega in the middle of the sudeikis/forte part of Mulaney song without them knowing about it was hilarious
the this aged poorly bit and the crowd Q&A piece was great, update was great as well
we got a reminder how good the show can be sometimes
