One thing we didn't get. Would've been cool if the episode showed what the planet looked like when the two knuckleheads beamed down. Missed opportunity. Probably because of its limited budget.

Story didn't end well, as I recall.

I remember watching that episode when I was a kid and I immediately noticed how they were different and thought they were dumb for being astounded about it.

I remember noticing instantly as well and kind of figuring that most people likely noticed pretty quickly. But you have to put it into the context of the late 60's I guess. They were trying to make a socio-political point, and so the actors and writers did the best they could with it - including acting astounded. Keep in mind that in that ideal Rodenberry Star Trek universe, such things as 'racism' were a far distant unrecognizable relic of the ignorant past. That such supposedly advanced beings were still clinging to such an archaic concept like that was the astounding thing (and I think the plot element the creators were going for).

I remember I kept waiting for one of them to punch the other and smear the obvious makeup

Very convenient to leave an active transporter station unattended and just allow 2 unauthorized aliens free use of your tech.
What’s the worst thing that could happen?

If I recall correctly, they were hyper powerful anyway, capable of disabling (and controlling?) any of the equipment on board the ship. No one could have stopped them. But I haven't seen the episode in years, so I might need a rewatch.

In that final scene, Uhura asked Kirk if she should alert security and he said no

Hell it was the only way to get them off his ship.
I'm sure Starfleet eventually sent a mission to investigate .

That makes sense.
I wonder if they loathed how they looked in a mirror. They always looked like the other guys in a mirror, unless they had 2 at 45 degrees.
