The movie chains have been reshowing Studio Ghibli films through the summer. This weekend is Princess Mononoke.

I am taking everyone in my house plus MIL who doesn't watch "cartoons".
Somewhere between 12 to 20 people. Going to crush my wallet, but I will spend so everyone can see this one the big screen,

Anyone else here going this weekend?

Spirited Away
Howling Castle

are some of the greatest films ever made, not just animated

Ponyo and Kiki are very good, too.

My Neighbor Tortoro I recently watched for the first time. Fantastic, simple story from a perspective of childlike innocence. I need to watch some of the others, soon.

We will go see Howl Moving Castle later this summer.
Spirited Away has already come and gone.

But if I get the chance to see Princess in theaters and don't take it, I would regret that.

Looks like Saturday is Sub, Sunday is Dub.

I really like the dub, All of the voice actors are fantastic.
Gillian Anderson's voice for Moro is F'ing sexy.

Probably the best theater experience of my life was seeing Princess Mononoke with a live orchestra in Manhattan. It was absolutely epic and has one of the best soundtracks of all time, so hearing it with live strings and a full orchestra was insane.

It wasn’t this performance specifically, but was like this:

I know this is blasphemous to say this, but I think the dub is better than the original Japanese. It takes me out of the movie that Moro is voiced by a deep male voice in the original, especially because in western culture wolves are primarily identified as females over males, but it’s the opposite in eastern cultures hence the male voice. But the voice cast is pretty much perfect in the dub.

I think they tend to show the dub one night and the sub the other. I try to make at least one film during Ghibli Fest every year because Miyazaki’s films are just magical on the big screen.

Mononoke I could go either way with dub or sub.

Howl’s Moving Castle has a fantastic dub cast.

Christian Bale
Emily Mortimer

I take dub over sub there.

Nausicca I go with sub, same with Castle in the Sky.

Kiki’s I could go either way.

Generally, in most cases, I've come to dislike dubs. Oftentimes, the acting isn't comparable at all. The understanding of the material is different and the translation can sound bizarre coming from an english speaker when it comes to Japanese. And, in many cases, any work that went into audio production gets lost in the english dub and you have this weird "person in a room" voice vibe rather than a part of the story.

Hell yes.

You can't go wrong with a movie marathon made up of those. If you have kids and want to do movie nights with them, get one of those, pop some popcorn, plop down on the sofa with them and let them take in some of the greatest animated films in history.

I prefer the dub with Miyazaki films at least. Back when Pixar was good, they were actually in charge of dubbing Ghibli films and did an excellent job doing it.

Plus Miyazaki himself says he’d prefer for you to watch the dubs because if you’re reading at the bottom of the screen, then you’re not fully paying attention to the beautiful animation.
