Marian is a dumb ditz.

Maybe now she will listen to Agnes and appreciate her for taking her weak arse in off the street.

Ah, well that makes sense. Fewer Kilometers' comment also seems in line with that whole culture.

There was a lot of exaggerated shite going on at that time.

Aunt Agnes was spot on with Mr. Rakes. I too figured him for an “adventurer”, but I misjudged his angle. In one of the earlier episodes he told Marian that her father only left her worthless railroad stocks. I thought that perhaps he knew the stocks to be worth millions and wanted to marry Marion to get that fortune. Well, looks like he had better fish to fry.

Ward McAllister was an actual person. His wife was from a wealthy Southern planter family; many of which vacationed in Newport.
His relationship with Mrs. Astor was also relatively accurately depicted in this show.

Here's the historical Ward McAllister:

That's why I put the word "imposter" in quotes. Sometimes Southerners will turn up their southernness if they're transplanted into a northern community. When I lived in the northeast I'd have people introduce me to their other southern friends, and a couple of them would overuse the "Y'alls" and throw in some cornpone sayings just to emphasize that they were different and special (up there).

It's obvious that these socialites have there public personas that they put on when interacting socially. I'm accepting McCallister's Foghorn Leghorn tone as him putting a thicker Southern layer on his conscious charm.

Some reason I kept picturing Michael Scott when he was Caleb Crawdad and saying "I do declare" in the southern accent.

I don’t think it’s so inaccurate for the time period. When I think how my great grandmother who was born in 1864 sounded and how her children born in the late 1880s - 1910 sounded, they all have much stronger and longer drawls.

Just watched the finale. Pretty entertaining show. It is one of the few that my wife and I both enjoy.

I agree with the consensus that George Russell is a badass and Marion Brook is kind of a moron. I like the Russell kids.

The scenes with the cook were great. Loved when he kept using the fake accent.

Marian was raised in a time where most women were expected to do as told. Additionally, she's from a small town and now in the big city. How the heck would she take care of herself besides finding a man to marry? I wouldn't say she's dumb. I'd say she's naive. She's barely even been courted or has an experience, so she easily falls for someone. She will learn from this, I believe.

I think that she has a big heart with a very liberal viewpoint (for her time) and like the hippies of the 60's, she cannot grasp the reality that she has to live within. If she wants to take on the social caste system, she should team up with Mrs. Chamberlain (who has a firm grasp on reality and how hard the real world can land on you.) Marian has no realization of how close she came to being on the street and how lucky she is to be under the roof of her aunt.

Bumping as a reminder for tonight's season finale.

Didn't realize it was already out.

Mr and Mrs Russell and the aunts definitely carry the show. Both Russell's are bad asses. I really like Ada, she's just a nice person and not as clueless as Agnes makes her out to be. Agnes is right about everything except she's pretty clueless on how smart Ada is.

I can hardly stand to listen to Mr McAllister talk though It's so bad.

This is the first time I’ve ever seen Cynthia Nixon in something and liked her. She actually gives a pretty subtle and charming performance with her mannerisms while she’s with different people.

Same.

I'm impressed with the range that she shows within this one character (who went from a first episode annoyance to a character that I look forward to seeing).

Finally got to watch the last 2 episodes. I enjoyed the season, but did anyone else find the storyline resolutions a but anti-climatic? Just felt like they built up a particular plot line, then it just fizzled out. Or maybe it was unfair to expect fireworks.

I agree, the finale was a little underwhelming. Most things were resolved, but not always fulfilling. For instance, the Ms. Turner storyline just kind of went away, and Mrs. Russell's pay off of getting Mrs. Astor over was meh as well.

They did leave a lot of meat on the bone for next season, but the stories they resolved just were underwhelming, particularly the Marian-Rakes one. After all that build up, the resolution just felt rushed.

And Mr Russell being exonerated felt the same way. They wait until the next to last episode to introduce his stenographer, then bam she’s the one skimming money from him.

But a lot of stuff still out there for next season. I kinda see Mrs Russell and Mrs Astor becoming friendly and turning on Agnes van Rhijn. And the Oscar-Ada situation could turn very ugly. They’re setting up Marian and Larry to be the likable couple.
