because this is supposed to be an entertaining sci-fi/horror flick.
I actually disagree with this. We'll never know's Scott's intent, but if he wanted to just make an entertaining sci fi/horror flick, he would have kept it more closely tied to Alien.
I think in the whole process of writing, and the "This is not an Alien prequel" line was Scott really wanting the movie to be more. To be bigger, better and more meaningful.
I mean, if you were just trying to make something entertaining, why WOULDN'T you connect it to your own series creation of highly successful science fiction movies? Why go out on a limb? Did Nolan intimidate him making the pinnacle of modern science fiction from nothing (Inception)? It was clear he wanted the movie to go BEYOND Alien in every way. There is absolutely no other reason to discount the connection so much.
At least that's how I read it.

OK. Good points there.
I guess like some said we'll have to wait for the director's cut edition of the film to see Scott's true intent. Like usual.

So should I expect all geologists to be like the one in Prometheus?

So there were TWO engineers in the beginning scene originally.

Yes. We all have mohawks, tattoos, cool accents, and a rugged personality.

This movie could have been so damn scary. The Creator wants to destroy you and created a vile creature/weapon to do it, yet even your God isn't all powerful enough to survive it.
What a bummer.
What a bummer.

Why didn't they just cast an actually old guy instead of covering Guy Pearce in horrible makeup?

In that sense it was a massive failure, unless he mean "beyond" in the way that Phantom Menace is "beyond" A New Hope

EXPLANATION OF ZOMBIE
This gives some background regarding the seemingly out of place zombie sequence...

Interesting find. And just further proof that Scott wanted to get as far away from Alien as he could with the Prometheus storyline. Ah what could have been...

Their concepts of space travel are annoying (in 70-80 years we're exceeding light speed or travel thru worm holes?)... and they talk about radioisotope dating in a ridiculous way on more than one occasion.
Do you think people in 1840 every thought people would fly? Do you think people in 1890 believed man would set foot on the moon?
certainly
Jules Verne was writing things like "From Earth to the Moon" and "Around the Moon" in 1870

It's such a frustrating movie because there is a great film in there somewhere.
Too bad it's hampered by the dumbest team of scientists in the galaxy that have a Friday the 13th moment in which everyone has sex and smokes pot as two useless characters get gruesomely murdered.
Michael Fassbender is the only thing that redeems it.

The zombie scene is the only one that really pissed me off. Along with the immediate removal of the helmets. Those 2 issues sent my nitpick meter into the red.
I still enjoyed the heck out of the movie although I will admit, I probably won't watch it again for another 10 years.
