Conan O'Brien. Norm tell the turtle roast beef on a hard roll joke. Mid1990s.

Pete Barbutti told the same joke on the Tonight Show June 17, 1983.

In fact, I think he may have lifted his delivery or it was inspired by Barbutti.

I'm gonna have to do more research. This news does not make me happy at all.

Jokes are meant to be told. Pete Barbutti probably got it from someone else.

I really enjoyed the part of the OP's post that included embedded clips and/or links to view said jokes

Their deliveries are nothing alike

NM did his standup in his "Canadian geezer" voice

I must say, I never understood why Barbutti was on the Tonight Show so much. I don't recall laughing at him once.

Norm used to do that from time to time. There's a compilation video of him and Letterman talking about a comic from the 80's and it cuts to Norm doing a couple of his bits on talk shows. I can't find it because I can't remember the comics name. I think it was his way of paying tribute to some of his favorites. I'm not aware of him doing anything like that in his specials.

Here's a video of him doing a couple of Super Dave Osborne jokes on Conan.

Yeah but Norm did it 10x better unlike Carlos Mencia who stole from Cosby but butchered the jokes because he sucks.

That Moth joke had been around for years. Nobody owns some jokes. It's how you tell the story. Even Norm said he was told the Moth joke years earlier while on SNL by I think Colin Quinn. But it was a two line joke. Norm turned a simple joke into a bizarre story..

Norm expounded on a 10 second joke that comedians knew and turned it into10 minutes and made it funny.

So Super Dave's moth joke is not remotely the same. Mencia didn't even bother to tweak jokes he stole and his storytelling was awful. Don't tread on Norm.

My great uncle would tell a variation of the same joke in the 70’s to all us kids

It's deeper than that. There was a miscommunication. Norm thought he was done, but there was nothing after him. During the commercial break, Conan said he had to stay for the last segment.

So, Norm built out the moth joke by adlibbing all the details and names - on the fly - with no notice.

Wrong. Comedians are cutthroat about outing joke stealers, that was the whole controversy with Rogan and Mencia

The truth behind that was that he didn’t know he was coming back after break until they told him going into commercial. He made up all the moth joke stuff as filler for the segment.

This is like saying anyone who tells The Aristocrats joke is a joke thief.

completely depends on the joke and the context. Norm didnt act like he is the one that came up with the moth joke, but he IS the one that had the genius idea of turning into a five minute epic tale. if some other comedian uses the moth joke as a one liner, then they arent stealing from Norm any more than Norm stole it from someone else. but if someone else tells a five minute story about a Russian moth with an existential crisis, then they ARE stealing from Norm.

so when the guy you were replying to said "nobody owns some jokes" and "it's how you tell the story", i think what he meant was it's the creative part of the joke that makes it someone's own joke - not necessarily the joke itself.

but it's also entirely possible that two funny guys come up with the same funny idea, which is where it gets messy and potentially unfair.
