You make one hell of a point here
People will be up in arms about a chick, but have no qualms about a short fat 800 year old green guy kickin everyone's arse or old Ben kickin arse as a 90 year old

This to me is something I thought Lucas got very right. Yoda was so disciplined that he refused to use the Force for anything unnecessary, even to help him walk. All people saw was "Yoda flies."
There are so many great stories that could be told in this universe, including those of new Jedi and the perils they face.

That's what frustrates me about reading anyone's theory or whatever that says "oh this guy is the luke of the new trilogy, and this guy is the Han Solo of this movie"
Like no, let's not just remake the first 3 movies, expand on one of the deepest universes in Cinematic history and show a little creativity

I don't mind her being a badass. I just want her to be a different kind of badass than say, Qui Gon.

None of the characters in the OT were overly physical. I just think her being a bad arse reinforces the ideas behind the force. How is what they're saying any different?

I just think the force became less cool when it was all physicality and laser swords...nothing to do with whether she can or not. yoda was a great warrior, but he wasn't flipping around with laser swords. he was lifting planes out of a swamp, he was teaching luke, meditation, etc.
this is what made empire such an awesome movie...the prequels are not good movies because all the great things about the force were either ignored or thrown away entirely.
yoda is a jedi master, so I don't want to see him fight period...she's not, but I think it would be great to emphasize the non physical and a mistake to showcase her as some arse kicking machine. If she is the main character and a jedi, I don't believe they'll do that anyway. most of the trailer moments show them under duress and struggling to overcome the odds...or in boyega's case...scared shitless.
the force was special because even this little tiny creature is a great warrior, and I think they can reinforce that with daisy ridley...she's very slender and she's a woman.

quote:yes, but you still have to stay grounded in those movies...the archetypes seem to be a mix and match of the originals with distinct new characteristics
let's not just remake the first 3 movies
the prequels sucked...the OT didn't. be original, bring new ideas, but be more like the OT, and less like the prequels. I bring the laser sword choreography from the prequels as exhibit a. the fast, highly choreographed fights in the prequels were emotionless and there was never anything at stake, but it disconnected from the world established...they didn't fight like that in the OT. same with the aesthetic...you have to stay rooted in the originals while bringing new ideas forward...the prequels suck because while they somehow managed to become entirely detached in style, aesthetic, etc. from the OT, but at the same time, they just reused ideas from the OT and borrowed images from it (ala Jurassic world) to create a connection...hey, wasn't that movie good? feel the same way about this one.

Okay, taking a break from the canon, Star Wars was a technological breakthrough. But you aren't going to show Alec Guinness doing somersaults in 1977. So you do have to consider the time the movies were made.
Luke and Vaders fight in Empire was pretty well choreographed. Canon wise, Vader was obviously more skilled than Luke. But Luke's raw ability kept him in the fight, perhaps fueled by his desire to save his friends.
And that still doesn't have to have anything to do with Midicholrians.

I agree with all that, just there are ways to do all of that without just making cookie cutter replacement archetypes of Luke, Leia, and Han and rehashing the same story

don't gay up my thread with this bullshite. the op is about how awesome the potential for her character is

using a lightsaber they did...it was the biggest frick you of the entire prequel trilogy.
quote:whose arse did he kick in the OT, he cut off some punk's arm? otherwise he lumbered around in one fight...a fight he lost. obi wan Kenobi was awesome, but not because he was some kind of awesome arse kicking machine.
or old Ben kickin arse as a 90 year old

quote:and? vader beat him more than just physically. it was a complete showcase of his awesomeness, probably the best moment is when he used the force to start pelting luke with industrial machinery or whatever that shite is, and luke realizes the extent of his power and how out matched he really is....before that he was kind of confident "you'll find out I'm full of surprises" i'm not saying make here a boring monk and never do anything...i'm saying use her to showcase the non physical elements of the force...I didn't say not to hit anyone. she carries a big fricking stick with her, force or no force, i don't have to suspend my disbelief she can kick the shite out of someone with that.
Luke and Vaders fight in Empire was pretty well choreographed

the first time I saw the first trailer I figured the girl would be "the sleeper that awakens". I figured she meant to be a jedi. maybe some relationship to solo or skywalker.
seems natural to go that route

Yeah but you have to have Jedi fight. Its what they do. It's like having a western with no gunfights.
Honestly, I do completely agree with what you are saying, btw. They were able to do more effects in Empire, and the duel between Vader and Luke is still fantastic. But that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy Qui Gon and Obi Wan vs Darl Maul. What you saw in Empire was a Sith Lord vs an inexperienced kid. Phantom Menace had three Masters in their prime.
Would you rather watch Randy Johnson pitch to Carlos Correa, or Nolan Ryan pitch to Babe Ruth?

i don't think they are, nor is anyone expecting it I think (at least a copy and paste)
poe - looks like he has elements of all 3. he's han like in that he's a great pilot and older than the other 2...he's like luke in that he is an x wing fighter pilot...he's like leia in that he appears to be the only 1 of the 3 characters already entrenched in the rebel alliance (or whatever they're calling it now), in a position of influence or rank, and gets captured by the mask wearing bad guy
fin - he's like han in that it appears he likes a good blaster at his side, he wears a jacket that is like han's but in the same style as luke's in the final scene of star wars. it appears he is unwittingly drawn into the adventure
daisy - most like luke. costume, desert planet, longing for a bigger life, a more adventurous life. the adventure comes to her and she's swept off
kylo ren -
the decision to give him a mask wasn't a coincidence.

YeH whenever they hired Adam Drivers goofy arse, I figured he had to be behind a mask.

quote:see originally, i thought the pacing was fast because of maul...he's so fast and he has a double edge sword and he's fighting two guys...but every single fight was like that and it was boring...that fight also had no emotion to it. there was nothing going on between the characters.
I didn't enjoy Qui Gon and Obi Wan vs Darl Maul. What you saw in Empire was a Sith Lord vs an inexperienced kid. Phantom Menace had three Masters in their prime.
quote:luke is the main character so him losing was kind of shocking, not to mention losing his hand. he also tried to kill himself. it's more like getting worked up for a young stud pitching to a prime ken Griffey, expecting to Griffey to strike out...and then Griffey rips a homer on a 3-1 fastball right across the plate. expected but not expected...expected, but still exciting
Would you rather watch Randy Johnson pitch to Carlos Correa, or Nolan Ryan pitch to Babe Ruth?
quote:if i were to agree this is the appropriate comparison, i would do so with the caveat that this at plate appearance is during a meaningless pre season game. there's nothing at stake in the maul fight, and like ruth and ryan, there's nothing between the characters.
Nolan Ryan pitch to Babe Ruth?

Well to this point, we would be forced as a viewer, to believe that a woman has the capabilities calm her mind and concentrate enough to be that strong with the force, without the incentive of a pumpkin spice anything as a reward.
I'm sorry, but at this time, I just can't make that type of cognitive leap.

I see what you're saying, and her casting alone makes me think that she won't be another annoying badass superchick who whips everyone's arse. If that were the intent, they'd have likely gotten someone bigger or more menacing.
But I do think the light sabers are important. It's a weapon that weighs essentially nothing, so I could see her having great speed and reflexes, and using that combined with the force to defeat enemies.

Even between the land and the ship
