as I do every year at Christmas time. All extended versions. Nothing else compares.

True cinematic excellence, and certainly in the conversation for one of the greatest trilogies of all time given its ability to sustain quality through all 3 films.

I'm trying to think of a better trilogy and can't. Nolan's Batman movies are up there for me but not as good at LOTR.

And I say this as someone that doesn't like GoT all that much. Still, it was interesting to see multi-dimensional characters, all with the capacity for good and bad acts operating in a politically charged environment that did not allow for such bright lines as draw in LoTR.

When they re-released the extended editions in theaters, my wife, kid, and I watched all three.
Money well spent.

quote:It's not difficult and I'm not exactly blazing novel territory here. What don't you understand? The character universe in LoTR is established with very little gray area - and certainly no sexuality - whatsoever. IOW, it's simplistic and childish.

e.g.
The Fellowship = 100% good
Sauron and co = 100% bad
There is no room for moral ambiguity. It's true that the ring is so powerful that it sometimes nearly seduces the good. But that's done in an incredibly hamfisted way - basically a complete physical overtaking that few have the energy to resist. e.g the breaking bad of Saruman. Yes, we learn he was once a colleague of Gandalf's that got turnt. However, we see literally zero complexity or perspective on that other than NOW SARUMAN BAD.
Honestly, the closest thing they show to emotional beings having real world feelings is when they show Sam longing for the bar maid and at least nominally jealous that another Hobbit might be showing interest in her.

I've seen the original several times and loved them but have never watched the extended versions. Is it worth my time to watch? What is different besides being longer?

Some people argue Star Wars (original trilogy) and Godfather 1,2,3. For my money though, it's LOTR all the way. Matter of opinion.

LOTR is a common answer. Others?
Toy Story 1-3, Leone/Eastwood, BTTF, Mad Max, Lethal Weapon?

So at some point when you were watching GOT, it made you think less of LOTR?
Are you some kind of whacko?

Last time I rewatched I was struck by the lack of diversity. Why are only white people opposing Sauron? Maybe we need a different perspective.

Well they’re fricking wrong. Maybe ten or twenty years ago people were arguing this, but that’s not up for debate anymore and quite frankly wasn’t at the time. It is mere nostalgia that people argued that Star Wars was better. Gen Z that didn’t experience either in the theaters thinks it’s absurd to say that Star Wars is better.

No, they're just wrong.

Sauron and the Balrog are Evil with a capital E, they are fallen angels who rebelled against and rejected God (Eru in this tale). Gandalf and Saruman are angels sent to inspire Men and the Elves, and Saruman has now fallen from grace too. There are no shades of gray in them, because they are not human.
Sauron is the Enemy of all peoples, immortal and closing his millennia-long plans to conquer and enslave Middle Earth (the entire world). Orcs and trolls are not tragic races, they are abominations, mockeries of God's creations.
Against that, you want to see petty infighting and political maneuvering? It would all be pointless. It would be like trying to rob cabins in the Titanic, hoping to grab some cash or jewelry... as the ship goes under. You either join to resist and fight, or you perish.
BTW, that's addressed a bit in LOTR. Gimli and Legolas come from rival realms that dislike and distrust each other. Aragorn is scorned as a vagrant by the Breefolk and Gondorians alike. The hobbits are a simple little folk of no value, ignored because they don't bring anything to the table. Smeagol is a despicable serial murderer, as well as an insane addict. Boromir looks down his nose at Aragorn, and laughs at the hobbits. But they have a task to do... so they tolerate each other.

I mean, orcs are tragic and the biggest abomination in all of Middle Earth given how they were directly Eru’s and the Music’s creation and Morgoth molested them to the degree of being pure evil.

Ehhh, this isn’t really the case with Boromir’s opinions on Hobbits. Boromir admired their resilience and valor. Yeah, he definitely looked down on Aragorn and saw him as a coward (at least initially), but Boromir didn’t look down upon the Hobbits. He got along with them, but Frodo did stand in his way of getting the Ring back to Gondor.

In my opinion it was the peak of big budget movie making.
Perfection and respectful to the source material

Our Christmas tradition, since 2010, is to watch LOTR on the 23rd-25th. Absolute GOAT trilogy. Anyone not watching the extended editions is missing out.
