I have no idea if it was staged or not, haven't really devoted much time to trying to get ot the bottom of it. But the ratings argument seems highly illogical to me. If it was staged for ratings, how exactly did they expect that to work? Taht it would happen, then peopple would tweet about it, then people would instantly tune in to try to see a replay of it? If it was announced ahead of time "hey watch as an unnamed celeb slaps another in the face! Tune in to find out who!" I'd at least get the line of thinking but I just don't buy that their goal to increase ratings was to do something crazy while the event is actually happening.

There is simply NO standup comedian that would promote normalizing going on stage and physically assaulting a stand up.

It would be a horrible thing for their industry.

Rock would not be involved with this in any way

If it were staged for ratings(I don't believe that it was) then I think the idea would be that many more people would tune in next year to make sure they don't miss any crazy shite that might occur. Still kind of a stretch.

It's mind blowing to me that people still think this was staged. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. You all think Chris Rock, one of the biggest stand up comedians ever and is worth $60 million, would "stage" being bitch slapped on the biggest awards show in the world, then just be left mumbling trying to think of something to say. You guys are frickin nuts

I havent spent a ton of time thinking about it because it's incredibly stupid either way, but I lean to thinking it is fake.

Chris Rock keeping his hands behind his back the entire time and leaning into it. There is no way he would have thrown his hands up in some way to protect himself, not keep them clasped behind his bad and lean in to it. So he had time to lean into it, but not move his hands? Did he think when Will pulled his hand way back that he was going to go in for a hug?

The Oscars have done publicity stunts before so it's not unheard of. The year Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner of Miss America, it got a ton of attention. Not longs after the Oscars just happen to call up the wrong winner of best picture and get themselves a lot of news attention. Ratings were the worst of all time last year so they needed people talking about it.

...and the ratings went down the next year.

They had a year with no controversy and the ratings went up.

As professional comedy writers are sharing...

If this was staged, Chris Rock would've had a prepared comeback joke to put an amazing button on the bit. It wouldn't have just been "Will slapped Rock".
It would've been "Will slapped Rock, then Rock said,
"I wonder if it's too late to change my vote for best actor?" (Or something similar.)

Chris Rock has NVLD. That's Non Verbal Learning Disability.

Basically, it means that he doesn't recognize non verbal cues like facial expressions, body language, etc.

He had no idea what Will Smith's intentions were when he walked up there. He leaned in (while smiling) and presented his lapel mic (stagecraft), I assume, because he thought something funny was about to happen.

I'm not saying it helped, but they tried, and it was %100 staged. I've seen on Twitter people saying "The Oscars are not the kind of even to do that." That's not true.

But there are plenty of comedy writers saying it's staged. It's not like all of them have that opinion. Seems like they would have a couple different camera angles to show.

Like I say, I was basically up in the air and I still lean towards staged, but I get the argument for it truly being Will is an absolute douche bag.

I'd have to go through my feed, which was too long ago. Just seeing comedians making fun of it on the few I follow right now. But there were some. Just because a comedian doesn't think it was real doesn't mean it wasn't real though, I'm not saying that.

I just have doubts, that's pretty much it and there are a ton of reasons, some I already mentioned that are legit reasons to doubt it.

Edit: I'm not a conspiracy theorist btw.

I just want to say for anyone claiming he leaned in for a staged slap, he was still leaning forward after the slap in the same manner. I believe that's just his presenting posture.
