Perhaps I should have been clearer, the list was covers that have eclipsed the original in some fashion. Most know the Linda Ronstandt one over the Dee Dee Warwick version. Heck, I'd say more people know the Van Halen version over the Warwick original. Personally I prefer Linda's, perhaps just simply for the better (later) recording. I also prefer the Betty Everett version for a similar reason. Warwick's did not chart where Linda's went to #1.

Cortez the Killer/Grace Potter and Joe Satriano

In my opinion puts the original to shame. Trumpet is amazing as well.

YOU'RE NO GOOD

I prefer Everett to Ronstadt. Then DeeDee.

I also prefer the Swinging Blue Jeans version, which I posted a few months ago in the garage tock thread.

Ronstadt is all technical precision and no soul. There is no ghetto or white trash in her.

Girls Just Want To Have Fun- Cyndi Lauper
You’ve Got a Friend- James Taylor

I'm not sure what the technical definition of cover is but both of these could go either way.

Lauper's release was the only commercial release of the song, the songwriter only recorded a demo as I understand it.

Taylor and King recorded the song simultaneously using the same musicians and released them the same year.

Also, a few of my favorite covers not on your list (which I think is great, BTW) that I think rise to the level of the original.

Hurt - Johnny Cash
Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann's Earth Band
Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix

Toots and the Maytals covering Country Road by John Denver

Absolutely better than the original, which was also grand. This might be the greatest example of a cover being better than an original that was already great.

Except that Ray Charles version is better than both of these.

This is accurate and does make it kind of not a cover. But not many know that it was originally written from a male POV.

Again, true. King's version came out first by a couple of months.
